Flooring Your Home: Carpet and Rug vs. Wood Flooring

You have considered many types of flooring, but decided to go for the ones that add warmth and cosiness to your home. These would be wood (hard wood or laminated) and carpet or rug flooring. As both seem very appealing, you won’t be able to decide unless you are well informed about all the benefits and downsides of these two. You want something that is easy on the feet and provides some insulation. 

Laminated Flooring

You might want to consider laminated flooring for your dining/ kitchen area as laminated flooring is also very easy to clean from stains and spills. You need to be careful with spills, as they need to be cleaned immediately in order to avoid damage.

Carpeted Flooring

Carpets are more difficult to clean. Depending on the type of carpet, the colour and fabric you might have trouble getting rid of dirt, pet hair and other spills. Wood flooring, especially hard wood wears out a lot more difficult than almost any other type. My aunt’s hard wood flooring is almost hundred years old. If you decide to put hard wood flooring this will be very appealing to future buyers as well. However, it is not water resistant. If, God forbid, a pipe bursts from the cold and floods your space, your wood flooring will swell and will need replacement. In addition, the colour of laminated flooring fades with time and because of the sun. That means you shouldn't forget to move your rugs around once in a while.

Hardwood Flooring

Wood flooring scratches easily from chair legs, high heels, the nails of your pet, etc. If that will drive you crazy carpet flooring is a better option. Its disadvantage is that it collects dirt and hairs and if you have someone in your family with asthma it is a very bad idea to go for carpet flooring. It is also sometimes difficult to install. It is good though if you have children, because it is soft with its padding and it is virtually impossible to slip on carpet. It has soundproofing qualities, as well as heat insulation ones.

You can go barefoot on your carpet and it will feel warm and soft on your feet. In terms of decoration carpets are also preferred as you can choose from variety of colours shades, shapes and patterns, all of which will compliment other features in your home such as your upholstery, curtains, wall colours, etc.
