How to Pack Fast and Move Fast

 1. Start early

It doesn't matter how good you are at packing, it will always take at least a bit longer than what you thought. So, begin about two to three weeks before your date for moving.

 

2. Pack strategically

Those boxes that you know you'll need desperately can be marked with something like a star. Place the stuff you'll need on day one – towels, sheets, change of clothing, toiletries – into a clothes hamper or suitcase for easy access.

 

3. Have a room for packing

Select a little-used room in your home for a packing station. Start there by putting together boxes of assorted sizing. Store a bunch of thick markers in the packing room, together with packing materials – unprinted newspaper, bubble wrap, and the like.

 

4. Save on boxes

Grab some used boxes. If you're really “green” you can drop the good boxes – after use – in with your nearest U-Haul. The company have established a program called “Take a Box Leave a Box.”

 

5. Don't pack heavy in big boxes

The self-movers among us tend to believe that big boxes are for heavy stuff. It should indeed be quite the opposite. Large boxes ought to be filled with light stuff, and heavy items such as books should be placed in smaller boxes. If you put heavy belongings in large boxes they can become too heavy to lift or the box could simply break. That will slow down the entire moving process.

 

6. Don't pack air

Instead of emptying chests and dressers, just leave them as is. Providing they are not packed with lead, they are easy to move and it’sgood policy in terms of time efficiency.

 

7. Padding, stacking, and packing

Utilize beach towels and blankets for padding and save on box space. Lamp bases and artwork can be wrapped in blankets and taped. Then, pack the lampshades carefully since they frequently take a beating during a move. Remove the shades, then stack them atop one another, small to large.

 

8. Label on two sides

Each box should be marked with contents and the destination -for example “kitchen,” on two sides. If contents are of a fragile nature, note that, too.

 

9.  Be ready

If movers are coming, pack everything before. If you've hired a truck, pack everything before you get it. Any furniture that needs disassembling, do it in advance. Roll any rugs up and tape tightly. If you are thoroughly organized, you'll spend less money on the movers, and they charge per hour. You'll also spend less on truck rental, if you're taking that route.
