How To Perform Sheet Metal Fabrication

If you are interested in learning a little bit about the metal fabrication process, we recommend that you start off with sheet metal. As the sheet is flattened, it is much easier to work with than other components (such as rods) and you will be able to get a much better feel for the method as a whole. It can also seem a little less overwhelming for those with very little experience.

We have outlined some basic instructions in the list below for your convenience; ensure that you have read through them multiple times and follow them carefully to avoid making a mistake.

1. Make a scale drawing of your design on graph paper. Ensure that you write out the dimensions of each piece, including the gauge as well as the type of metal (such as steel, gold, brass, etc) for reference.

2. Order your sheet metal. It’s a good idea to allow an extra 10% to cover for any possible mistakes (in calculating the amount needed or in cutting). It’s much easier to order it all at once.

3. Set up a work surface that is large enough to hold the finished design. Ensure that you have protected the surface of the table if necessary, as the edges of a sheet during metal fabrication are sharp.

4. Make a full size pattern of your design. You will need to do this on either paper or cardboard and will form your template. If the design is flat, you can use paper; if it’s dimensional, use cardboard.

5. Make a mock up of your design. Whilst this step isn’t strictly necessary, it’s a great way to find problems with the design before you start cutting into the expensive sheet.

6. Put on some heavy work gloves. Metal edges can be incredibly sharp and the oil applied to the surface to avoid rust can irritate the skin, so it’s important that your hands are protected.

7. Lay the pattern pieces on top of the sheet, secure them with tape and draw the outline. You will need to use a sharp transfer pencil for this (it needs to be sharp to ensure a thin, fine cutting line).

8. Cut out the pieces using sharp metal cutting shears. Keep in mind that a large and/or elaborate pattern may require more than one pair of shears in order to cut all of the pieces out.

9. Double-check your measurements before cutting. If this is your first metal fabrication project, it’s a good idea to cut the pieces just a shade larger – it’s easier to trim the excess off than it is to cut again.
