2016: Know What Home Décor Trends Are In And Out

Written by Posted On Thursday, 25 February 2016 12:32

A design trend that once looked great in your home — or that was all over Pinterest last year — may look outdated and stale to potential buyers. If you are updating your home and staging it to sell, then a fresh approach may be best. According to home-selling experts at About.com, buyers need to be able to see themselves and their possessions in your home; choosing a look that is not tied to a dated trend will help your prospects “see” the home in the best possible light. Knowing what design trends are here to stay — and which are on the way out — can help you stage your home in the best possible light.

Say Goodbye to:

Neon Colors and Lights

Bright, almost garish colors coupled with white may still work as accents, but if you fully embraced the neon trend by painting a wall or even a whole room, a quick re-paint can help keep your décor looking fresh and buyer-friendly. Overly bright shades of yellow, orange, pink and blue peaked and faded in 2015, leaving many homeowners wondering, “What was I thinking?”

Vinyl Wall Words

Readers of decorating magazine, House Beautiful called this trend out in 2014 and it is even more outdated today. If you are selling your home, then the presence of wall words or words as art may be more than dated; if the prospective sellers do not agree with your posted messages and viewpoints, they may remove your home from consideration entirely. Peel away the vinyl and replace it with a more classic piece of art or a framed mirror instead.

Chevrons and Burlap

Both of these trends topped Pinterest and decorating blogs in 2104 and 2015, but have recently begun to look dated. If you have a lot of chevron-patterned accents, swapping them out for a more modern print or pattern is an easy way to update your home.

Keep These Classics Around

Geometric Patterns

Chevrons may be outdated, but geometric shapes and patterns are right on trend for 2016. With a rising interest in polka dots and in Art Deco inspired furnishings, geometric inspired patterns are a trend to watch for 2016 and beyond. Use decorative art panels, framed artwork and throw pillows to update your home with a fresh, geometric pattern if you are showing or selling in 2016.

Mirrored Accents

Whether you choose a single, breathtaking, oversized piece to be the focal point of a room or group smaller mirrors with framed artwork, mirrors do more than just offer an attractive decorating touch. Mirrors reflect light, making a room look brighter and larger — ideal conditions if you are showing your home to prospective buyers. Select frames that work with the rest of the room and provide an added boost of color, pattern or shape for even more impact.

Stainless Steel

Manufacturers continue to embrace this trend for kitchens and bathrooms, so exchanging fixtures and household appliances with stainless steel models is an easy way to update your home. If you already have stainless steel, then you can rest assured that this particular style is here to stay.

Embracing modern design trends (and getting rid of any outdated fads) can help you stage your home to sell and prevent your interior from looking aged. Giving décor that is past its prime the boot can revive your home, and appeal to the widest group of potential buyers.
