Torsion Spring Selection 101

Written by Posted On Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:43

There are a variety of garage door springs that vary in size, depending on how high and how heavy your garage door is. Without proper spring function, your garage door won’t work well and it could be potentially dangerous to use. Some of the basic types of torsion springs are described below.

Standard torsion springs:
These types of springs are commonly found on residential garages. They are usually mounted over the garage door opening and are supported by a shaft that goes through the middle of the springs. Lighter doors usually have just one spring, whereas heavier doors oftentimes have two.

Easy set torsion springs:
These are comparable standard torsion springs, but require a different set of hardware for installation. They are mounted on the end of the torsion shaft next to the cable drums rather than being mounted in the center of the torsion shaft.

Extension springs:
These springs work on a pulley system and are the most common springs out there. For installation, they are mounted parallel to the garage door tracks on each side of the garage door.

Steel rolling door torsion springs:
These springs are used for steel doors (most often in commercial buildings) and vary greatly due to the size and weight of the door. The spring is located inside of the torsion barrel that supports the whole rolling door.

Torque master torsion springs:
Designed specifically for safety, these springs enclose on the inside of the torsion shaft and are secured by a winding cone on the end of each torsion rod. Instead of using a traditional winding bar, torque master springs use a power drill.

Measure your door and know what it’s made of. Inspect the components carefully and determine which springs you need. Torsion springs vary in cost, ranging from $8 up to $100. Then, once you have determined which items you need, contact a reputable garage door professional to install them.

The average cost for this service ranges, but on average should be between $200 and $300 for two springs including labor and parts. Because this is a somewhat costly installation price, consider investing in a premium set of torsion springs that will last longer and be more effective. Switching out torsion springs can be dangerous and it should be a job that’s completed by someone with significant experience.
