HUNTING FOR AN INTERN | Torey'sThoughts Ep. 16 from Philly

Written by Posted On Saturday, 30 April 2016 15:04

This hunt for finding a good intern is pretty much like everything else I do.  Full of hurdles and headaches.  The most recent hurdle gently annoyed me a bit and I want to tell you about it:

One of the schools I reached out to was University of the Arts.  I did this because I hear they have a good film program & impressive talent.  I posted an internship opportunity that was recently rejected because University of the Arts said it "did not meet their academic criteria; I was not formally educated in film and video production" and "I was not offering a paid position".  Each statement is true, I do not have the budget for the overhead of someone else's time outside of providing meals and doing the small things that make people feel appreciated at this stage in my business.  The bigger point is they are rejecting my opportunity without recognizing the value of the opportunity to their students and figuring out a way to make it work for everyone.

On one side, I get it.  I get the University has standards that they use to protect the integrity of their program.  I applaud this.  They do it for a sound reason.  My pain point is they just flat out rejected this proposal without serious consideration.

In this proposal I was offering a great deal of value to a intern:  I am giving them the opportunity to co-create videos with their own creative direction and provide them a context to gain real world experience.  As you most likely know reading this, you gain the bulk of your skill on the streets, at your job, or through a mentor in addition to the previous.  Not in academia (Medical & Science excluded).

I assume I will never be the most versed photographer or videographer, but that is also not my passion.  My passion is real estate and I deploy creating substantive content as tool to carve my niche in my craft.  What the intern would be able to do is experiment, learn from failure, celebrate success, and hone their personal craft within the context of the company's goals and their personal style.  This intern would have that chance to have an equal role and learn from the top down.  They would have serious responsibility and learn skills of not only how to shoot, produce, and distribute videos; but important business skills, the art of execution (just doing it),  and a different scope to view the world through.  As a result of video being an integral part of my business plan, the goal was to retain the intern in a significant full time position in the near future once the company can justify the investment.

Instead of thinking about the context, trajectory, and scalability this opportunity can bring to a student's life and asking the question of "how can we make this opportunity a win-win-win for everyone involved", University of the Arts just said "No."

WHAT I DO:  I save you time and energy by guiding you throughout the home buying and selling process.

HOW I DO IT:  I connect the dots between what you think you know and what you don't yet know but need to know.  The internet can make us feel like we know it all and don't need a real estate agent, when in fact what it actually does is it gives us much more information than we know what to do with.  I blend my proprietary insight gained through many conversations, observations, and years of experience with what you already know to create a useful action plan to get us from point A to point B.  For all of the moments in between those big moments, I rely on consistent communication to prevent your mind from wandering away, so we can stay laser-focused on the end goal.

WHAT MAKES ME DIFFERENT:  My approach.  I am a Millennial who understands real estate by internalizing why things work the way they do.  By understanding the "why", I can provide insight on a deeper level and align you with better opportunities in any market.  I get to understanding the "why" by working really hard and caring a lot about my clients and everyone around me.

ABOUT ME:  I became passionate about real estate when I thought it was really cool people owned big buildings (Even cooler that people paid the owners of those buildings more than what it cost them to own it).  From that day, I devoted a lot of time, effort, and energy to internalizing how to invest in real estate.  Flash forward to today:  I am not only continually learning on a daily basis, but i am also executing daily while paving my own path to spreading real estate insight and offering reliable real estate representation.
