Creative and Modern Kitchen Ideas

Written by Posted On Wednesday, 29 March 2017 00:53

Modern decor is functional, simple and structural. If you want to decorate your kitchen using this style, stick to minimalist designs and pick utensils, cabinets and accessories that are simple and basic.

Choose a Layout

Before you start designing your kitchen, decide on the kind of layout you want. Make the most of your space. If your kitchen is small, consider the galley layout. For a larger space, go for a U or L shaped layout and install an island in the centre. These shapes provide plenty of countertop space. You could also consider adopting the work triangle, which is a great idea for modern kitchen layouts. This connects the sink, the stove and the refrigerator, the three main work areas in your kitchen, in a triangular shape. This utilitarian design works well for minimalist kitchens.

Storage

Storage is another important factor to keep in mind when designing a kitchen. Know exactly where you want your large appliances to go. Also consider where you will store your kitchen gadgets and utensils. You don’t want your kitchen to look too cluttered, as this is contradictory to how a modern kitchen should look. Aim for an uncluttered and less-is-more appearance.

Pick a Style You Like

Once you have the problem of storage out of the way, you can browse through modern designs for a style that you like. A modern kitchen should not just have a contemporary look but should reflect your personal style with its decor and feel.

Cabinets and Countertops

When choosing cabinets and countertops, go for those made of unique materials. You could choose granite or marble if you want a sophisticated look, or else opt for more basic materials such as concrete, limestone and stainless steel, which are quite popular. If you’re on a budget you could choose cabinets made of less expensive materials but which provide a classy look such as flat pack kitchens. To add some colour to brighten up your kitchen, you could add mosaic tiles to your countertop. You could also pick cabinets with frosted doors, for a modern flair.

Colour Scheme

Your colour scheme should be monochromatic, with muted white, grey, black or neutral tones and a few splashes of colour if you want. The architecture and decor should consist of strong clean lines, a lack of ornamentation and few textures. The furniture should ideally reflect this stark look. Choose furniture that is contemporary, in simple styles and monochrome colours.

Kitchen Accessories

You can decide on the type of accessories you want to use by reviewing modern kitchen photos to find what is inspiring to you. You could choose from a variety of light fixtures, ornaments, sculptures, rugs, place mats and paintings. To balance out the starkness of modern decor, liven up your kitchen with a few plants or flowers in an interesting vase. Just remember not to overdo your accessorizing.
Your kitchen should be both functional and pleasing to the eye. Remember that you will use your kitchen to entertain as well as to cook your meals.
