Garage Door Repair Helps Couple Sell Their Home

Written by Posted On Sunday, 23 April 2017 15:32
My husband, Alex, had been offered an amazing job, with one catch: it was across the country! The new position would be more responsibility and would come with a big pay raise, but it also meant we were going to have to uproot our lives quickly and move. That meant packing, selling our home, and finding a new one to top it off. It was going to be tricky, but we were pretty sure we could make it work, so Alex accepted the new position, and we started planning.

We put the house on the market immediately and began packing. Our Realtor had a lot of advice for us to make the house more attractive to buyers, but most of the tips were things we would have needed more lead time on, so we did not get around to most of them. One thing she was dead set about, though, before the house would sell.

We would need to get the garage door repaired, which we had been putting off for months now. My husband had backed his car into it while it was closed, and the remote opening and closing had not worked since. We had to manually open and close the garage doors, and it was often such a pain that we just parked in the driveway. At the time we put the house on the market, we had not used the remote to open the garage doors in at least three months.

So we decided we would have that fixed, along with a fresh coat of paint throughout the house and the carpets cleaned once we had packed and moved everything out. But it had been two weeks since we put the house on the market and while people were coming by and showing interest, there had been no offers. We knew fixing the garage doors would help, but that was not finished yet, and we could not start painting or cleaning until everything was moved out.

We decided Alex would go ahead first, followed by the movers. About a month after first accepting the job, he took off with our stuff to try and find us a new home across the country. I would follow a couple of weeks later, hopefully after selling the house. I moved temporarily into a hotel, and finally, was able to have the work done on the house that needed to be done before it would sell. I was sure it would sell, but it had not been as fresh as it could have been so far.

Now empty, the carpet cleaners and painters were in and out in a hurry, along with the garage door repairman. It did not take long to get an offer after that. There were still many things we did not have a chance to fix in the house, and we took a slightly lower price for it.
But fixing the garage door ended up getting us more money for the house than we would have lost by not fixing it.
