The first thing to do as soon as you buy the house is service and clean all its mechanical equipment. You not only have to perform routine maintenance on the house’s heating and cooling systems but also get a service contract for them.

There is always the chance of it breaking down during winter and there’s no point in overpaying technicians when a service contract quotes reasonable rates. Get suggestions for reputable and experienced technicians for the job through your neighbors. This is also a great reason to get to meet and know your neighbors!

2. Install a good surveillance system

Next, check and ensure all the house’s smoke alarms are working properly and are suitably placed around the house. It’s also worth installing a secure surveillance system which will give you some peace of mind as it helps you keep a watch on your family and home through your phone.

3. Change door locks

As soon as the deal is finalized and you are handed the house’s keys, it’s imperative that you either buy and fit new lock sets or have a professional locksmith come over and do all the changing themselves.

This is a necessary precautionary measure as so many people had access and perhaps keys to the house- the previous owners, realtors, maintenance people and other people like cleaner people. So it’s better investing and getting new locked installed as quickly as possible for your peace of mind.

4. Clean up the houseman cleaning the home

While it’s true that the previous owners may have cleaned the before moving out, most of us will only feel comfortable moving into it after cleaning it ourselves. Hire professionals to do a thorough cleaning for you especially if time is tight.

However if you opt to do it yourself, first get all the necessary supplies and tools you will need to get the job done like brooms, mops, buckets, a vacuum and a variety of detergents to clean different types of surfaces.

Start by washing down all the walls, cabinets, counters and plumbing fixtures and then start cleaning the carpeting, floors, bathrooms, etc. Once you are done, you will feel good about the house and feel even more excited to move in.

5. Test Electrical Outlets and Change switch plates

There is a good chance that older houses, especially one that has undergone quite a few renovations to end up with conflicting outlets and tarnished switch plates.

Call an electrician to test all the outlets in the home to ensure they are all in working order so you don't get caught out when you really need one. You can get him to replace all the switch plates while he is at it. This improve the aesthetics of your home and adds some uniformity . These small changes make your home seem so much newer and cleaner than before.

While it’s true that all you need is a small screwdriver to change cover plates, it involves electricity. So it’s not a good DIY project for you to do on your own unless you have experience and know how to work with electricity.

6. Paint walls and ceilings

A new coat of paint is one of the easiest ways to spruce up the looks of your home and is best done before you actually start moving all your furniture in (saves you the hassle of trying to paint around your furniture if you were to do it after moving in).

You can hire a professional to do it or easily learn to do yourself if you are on a tight budget. Just set a weekend aside and enlist the help of a few family and friends. All you need is a few buckets of paint, dropsheets, rollers, paint brush etc.

7. Get Organizersmoving out in Sydney

Most joinery in old houses consists of cupboards with a single pole and a shelf which may not accommodate your things. Take a look at the cupboard and after deciding where you will store your things; use some organizers to help store all your things.

This makes moving less stressful and your life in the new house much better. Not only the closets, you also have to decide where you will store everything ranging from your boots to soaps. Sometimes all it takes is an extra shelf or coat hook to make your home more comfortable!
