Metal Roof Technology and Production

Metal roofs are usually made from stone coated or painted steel formed into pieces or tiles. There are a lot of metal roof types, and they all have their pros and cons.

Types of metal used are zinc, steel, copper but the most popular are galvanized steel and aluminum.

The metal coil needs to undergo the dipping process, like the galvanization process. Here the coil goes trough a mixture of boiling galvanic and molten zinc, this way a thin layer is formed around the coil. Aluminum coils don't need to be galvanized.

This metal now enters the machine that makes it into a metal coil and later into a metal roofing panel. Coil gets fed into the rolling machine, making bends and curves. The furnace also softens the metal using cooling tubes and ammonia.

Afterward, they get cleaned and dried as they are ready to get painted. The machine applies a layer of solar paint which is baked at a high temperature; this process happens two times to ensure even coating. After this, the primary color is added in additional two layers. Machines control most of the processes. It's accurate and runs at a higher speed than a human would be able to.

Coils get shipped away to roofing manufacturers where they get split according to size. These coils can be found made into metal roofing panels or sold at sheet metal shops.

Most metal roofs come from the same few places, there only a few manufacturers that make this kind of work. Each manufacturer has their on terms, warranties, and prices that should be taken into account when choosing, the main factor here is to ensure a high-quality roof and make sure to have the right people installing it.

Metal panels aren't the only thing needed for a metal roof to function. The accessories used to make up a huge part of the roof. They include gable trim, ridge cap, flashings, and others. These need to fit perfectly, and there is no room for error. An automated hydraulic shear cuts the strips of metal making sure it's perfect every time. The finished products are stored on racks where they get picked up by forklifts and transported for further use.

Some metal roofs are also stone-coated, this process is used mostly on steel. The metal is coated with stone chips and an acrylic film that gets it attached to the steel. This way the roof keeps its aesthetic, but it becomes much more durable.

Besides the traditional metal types used in roofing, there are more exotic materials that can be utilized. For example, there is rolled zinc and titanium, and while these may be a bit more expensive, they are durable a considered by some much better looking than classic metal roofs. In the end, most of it depends on your budget and your will to spend, but if you're willing to spend some extra money going for an exotic roof isn't that bad of an idea.
