Why Your Business is the Center of My Universe

Finger Always on the Pulse Finger Always on the Pulse

"If you want to be the best in your industry you need to have a relentless dedication to your job." - Danica Patrick

Last Friday I was blessed to once again be invited on CNBC and discuss the state of the housing market. The camera crew was in the building at 7:30am to set up the office with lighting and cameras, and a few of my fellow team members came into work early to share in the excitement. Though not the first time I’ve had the privilege of speaking on a nationally syndicated news outlet, the combination of excitement, anxiety and gratitude never fail to remind me what it took to get here – the relentless and unwavering dedication to becoming the best at my craft.

When CNBC’s Diana Olick decided she was going to run with refinances for one of this week’s segments, the decision to do so was made only a few days in advance. That’s what makes news news - having her finger on the pulse of everything real estate means always knowing what’s going on all the time, and being in a position to immediately report that information to her audience. Keeping that in mind, it’s easier to understand why only those individuals equally committed to staying at the center of their industry at all times are employed as trusted sources for such information.

Almost every time I go on television I’m asked by friends and colleagues, “how did you get to go on XYZ show?”, “can you introduce me to the host I think I’d make for a great guest!” Friends, I will tell you what a mentor told me, there is no special sauce. I am not a man born into connections, I do not have a specialized prospecting strategy for securing television interviews, none of that. All I can tell you is that every day I try to provide the best service humanly possible to my clients. As a result, I am constantly at the center of our industry’s universe learning and understanding new products, services, technologies, regulations, etc. that we can incorporate into our business to help grow those of our realtor partners.

If our every day is spent, understanding the happenings of our industry and the impact it will have on both real estate and mortgages, who would make the most sense for any syndicated columnist to want to interview on the subject? A great reporter must always have a source cued into whatever is happening in the scope of their coverage at any time. Now ask yourself, are you that person? At a drop of a hat if a reporter from XYZ Business News called to gauge your opinion on your local real estate market, would you be able to have a full-length conversation with them.

Before I was ever asked to do a television interview this was the mentality I already practiced with my clients. I felt that it was my duty as a mortgage professional to be the sole trusted resource of industry news and insights to all of my realtor partners. If an agent calls and asks how to revive a struggling deal, I needed to be able to have an answer for them. If an agent turns on the news to hear about changes in product guidelines for Fannie Mae products, I needed to be able to explain the impact it can have on their business. Those feelings of excitement, anxiety and gratitude that made me feel alive when CNBC came to our offices last Friday? Those are the same range of emotions I have had every time an agent has called since the day I earned my license. As the saying goes, “the way we do one thing is the way we do everything.”
