To DIY or Not to DIY: A Short Guide to Handling Household Issues

Written by Posted On Friday, 25 August 2017 15:47

If you live in a house long enough, you will come across a variety of problems such as a leaky roof or a light that won't turn on. In some cases, you can handle these issues on your own. However, it may be easier if you hire someone else to do the job instead. How do you know which is the right decision?

How to Handle a Leaking Roof

When you see water dripping from a ceiling or red stains along the walls, you know that the roof is likely where it is coming from. If you have the equipment to climb up on your roof safely, it may be possible to handle the work yourself. However, if you lack the training, equipment or skill to work at heights, let a contractor do the job instead.

How to Handle a Plumbing Issue

If the tub or sink drain slowly, it may be possible to fish out the blockage yourself. However, if pouring liquid gel or using a plunger isn't enough to solve the problem, call a professional like HELP Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Electric or someone similar. The last thing that you want to do is break a pipe or make the job bigger because you made a mistake.

How to Handle an Electrical Issue

Electrical issues that require nothing more than replacing a fuse or resetting the circuit box may be handled on your own. If you have to work with wires or work near a gas or water line, call a professional. This may also be a good idea if you have an electrical emergency overnight or on a Saturday and need the problem fixed within a matter of hours.

How to Handle a Pest Issue

There are few feelings worse than seeing ants or mice running through your kitchen. While you may be able to capture a single mouse or take care of any ants that you see, there are likely more vermin lurking where you can't see them. Ideally, you will call an exterminator to inspect your home and come up with a comprehensive plan to get rid of the pest or rodent issue for good.

Most homeowners think that they can handle issues on their property on their own. This is usually because it’s cheaper to take care of a problem without the need to call a professional. However, it may not be a good idea to let pride or finances get in the way of resolving a problem properly and in a timely manner.
