Five Signs Your Tumble Dryer Needs Repairs

When it comes to running a home, you may find that your appliances develop faults more often than you’d hoped. Since we depend on them for our day-to-day lives, it can cause havoc for everyone in the home – not just the adults!

A tumble dryer is a commonly used household appliance that needs to be well maintained to prevent it from becoming hazardous. They’re one appliance that homeowners can be wary about using, but are perfectly safe if they’re functioning properly.

In this guide, we’ve shared five key signs which may indicate that a tumble dryer repair is on the cards:

1. The dryer isn’t heating properly

A dryer works by warming clothes to remove the moisture held within the material. If your tumble dryer is not drying clothes properly, then it is likely that it isn’t heating to the correct temperature. As a result, you waste your hard-earned cash on energy bills without seeing the benefit.

Problems with the heating element of a tumble dryer can be caused by many things. One of the most common is blockages due to a build-up of lint, along with broken thermostats or electrical faults.

2. Water is leaking from the appliance

If you’ve spotted water dripping from your appliance, it could signal a fault that requires repairing. Water tanks can have a tendency to overfill, and they can usually only be repaired by a qualified engineer.

However, water leaks from a tumble dryer can also be the result of a blocked exhaust hose. This can be corrected by investigating the hose and removing any blockages of lint, clothing or mould.

3. There’s a bad tumble dryer smell

Another common issue that may signal that you need tumble dryer repairs happens when the appliance develops a bad smell or odour.

Funky smells can be caused by a build-up of lint within the appliance. This can usually be resolved by cleaning the lint filter or unbending the vent hose. However, if the smell doesn’t go away, there may be a more serious problem.

4. The machine won’t start

A tumble dryer repair may be required if you try to turn on the appliance, only to find that there’s a lack of power. This is an extremely common issue, but it may not be a major cause for concern.

Firstly, check that the door of your tumble dryer has been closed properly. Many appliances have a safety feature whereby the machine won’t turn on until the door is fully shut.

However, if the appliance door has been shut and there’s still no sign of life in your tumble dryer, it may mean that the machine isn’t properly vented. This is a tricky task that may require professional tumble dryer repairs in order to fix it.

5. The internal drum isn’t turning

The final sign that a tumble dryer needs fixing is that the internal drum of your appliance isn’t turning properly. Again, this can have an easy fix and may be caused by a faulty belt.

The internal drum could also fail to turn if the motor is faulty. If the machine keeps running without being repaired, your clothes will stop drying effectively.

As you can see, tumble dryers are prone to repairs, but they don’t have to impact on your daily chores if you book a repair as soon as you spot the issue.
