How to Know If You Have a Broken Garage Door Torsion Spring

Written by Posted On Sunday, 05 November 2017 01:21

Most homeowners do not realize the spring of their garage door is broken, until they notice that the opener is not operating very smoothly, or is creating much more noise than normal. Aside from this, there are other signs that can help you find out if you do have a broken torsion spring.
The easiest way to determine if your torsion spring has broken is by performing a visual inspection. When a spring is wound up, it becomes 2 inches longer. After the torsion spring is wound, the cone is clamped down the shaft, so that it can wind the cables when the door moves up.
Apart from visually inspecting the garage door spring, there will be a very loud noise when a spring breaks. Torsion springs are mounted on the door and have a metal rod running through the middle. When these springs break, they unwind and make a very loud noise due to the coils spinning on the rod.
Working with huge, heavy springs is dangerous, so if you need yours replaced, it would be best to leave the job to a garage door repair professional.
