What Is Your Heating System Trying to Tell You?

If you are sat at home and can hear your central heating system being suspiciously loud, you may have an issue that needs addressing. The reason for this increased volume can be a wide range of factors and central heating noises can present themselves in all manner of ways.

On the plus side, there are a few noise inducing problems that can be rectified yourself at home but of course, some complications will need to be assessed by central heating professionals.Take a look at how troublesome systems can be identified through sound and what you can try to do to get heating running peacefully and efficiently again.

Gurgling Sounds Coming from Radiators

Radiators can often sound as though they are “gurgling”. It most cases, this is because there is air trapped inside with no means of escape. The simple solution is to bleed them out to ensure that no air is trapped and radiators can work as efficiently as they should.

Take a bleed key and put it in the radiator valve. Ever so slowly turn it anticlockwise and you should hear hissing which is the air escaping. When the sound stops, simply turn the key back. It is important that this is done slowly as turning the key too far will release water, so a slower turn will mean there is less chance of soaking everywhere.

Humming Noises Coming from the Boiler

Humming sounds from the boiler can be an indication that heating isn’t working as it should. This is particularly true if timing or pressure settings are incorrect. You can take the following steps to check whether there are issues, but only do so if you have a level of knowledge and know what to look for. In other cases, it’s definitely best to call an expert who knows what they are doing.

Have a look at your thermostat to ensure that it’s functioning as it should. If not, you may have found the humming culprit. If it is working, take a look at your pump to check that it isn’t going too quick.

You may also want to reduce the pressure setting. An excess amount of pressure can leave pipes damaged.

Strange Tapping Sounds

When limescale builds up (as it undoubtedly will if you’re not careful), it can often result in tapping sounds. If this sounds familiar, and you are comfortable with trying to resolve the issue yourself, you can clean pipes to reduce limescale and get rid of the noise.

When heating is turned off, use a nonacidic cleaner to clean the system. Not just any old cleaner will do though and it’s going to be specific to your radiators and boiler. If you have an older system, you may need a stronger solution so be sure to ask and ascertain which cleaner will achieve the best results when you go to pick some up.

Strange Creaks and Clicks from Below

Water flowing through your heating system’s pipes will cause them change in size – expand when heating and back to normal once temperature drops. It’s not going to be a massive increase but it can still take its toll. In the event that there is not enough room for these changes to occur beneath the floorboards, creaking or clicking like sounds may be noticeable.

You can try and sort this yourself but if you do not feel completely and totally at ease with doing so, please don’t. This is absolutely best left in the hands of a competent professional with experience of this kind of issue.

You could take a look at your pipes and decide whether they have enough room to function properly. In the event that they are rather close to your floorboards, you could try to use a saw and a chisel to fashion more space.

If you are hearing strange noises but are satisfied that there is plenty of room, light insulation around pipes may help to lower sounds.

Don't Overestimate Your Abilities

Any repairs you attempt to carry out yourself are going to see you assume all responsibility. A lot of domestic heating system issues will require the experience and knowledge of a trained professional and as such should never be attempted by anybody without at least a little nous of heating systems. If you do need to enlist the help of an expert company, remember to ensure you're getting somebody who knows what they are doing.

Nobody wants to experience heating issues and knowing what your system is saying can help to quickly and effectively sort the problem, whether that’s by you or somebody else.

If this all sounds a bit scary, a heating care package might be for you, like this one for example.
