5 Things to Look for When Moving to a New Home

Written by Posted On Monday, 09 April 2018 13:07

When you’re moving, there are certain things you already know you’re looking for: a specific number of bedrooms or a particular neighborhood. But there are other things you should be looking for that you might not have considered. Here are five things to look for when moving to a new home.

Closets

Older homes often have smaller closets, while newer ones have larger ones. If you need a lot of storage space, it’s important to ensure you have it before you move in. While you can add storage space later, you may have to sacrifice living space to do so. Be sure that’s a sacrifice you’re willing to make before you sign the dotted line.

A Garage

A garage is useful in numerous ways. Aside from the obvious benefit of being able to park your car in it, you can also use it to store bikes and outdoor toys. It also provides a great storage space for seasonal items such as Christmas decorations or seasonal clothing. It can provide a workspace for hobbies or for working on DIY projects, as well.

But in order to do any of these, it also needs a functioning garage door. If there are problems with the door, it doesn’t have to be a deal breaker. You can have someone such as Affordable Garage Door Repairs look at the door and tell you if it’s broken springs, an alignment issue, or something else, and often have it repaired quickly and inexpensively.

Natural Lighting and Shade

Does the house get plenty of natural light during the day? Is there any shade? You want to consider both of these because they both impact your utility bill. Without enough natural light, you’ll be using lamps and overhead lights during the day if you’re home. No shade means the air conditioning will run more in the summer to keep the house cool. Ask to see previous electric bills for the home to see if you can handle it.

Necessities

Supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants, and more are all things that you will need access to when you move. While you may not care about living very close to them, you do want to find out where they are. The last thing you want is to be in desperate need of coffee and have no idea where to find either a supermarket or coffee shop.

Neighborhood Features

You want to be sure there are quality schools for your children to attend, a low crime rate, and perhaps even community events that you can all enjoy as a family. Maybe what really matters to you is a quiet neighborhood or one with access to a community pool or a nice playground. Whatever is most important to you, make sure the home is located in an area that offers it.

Moving into a new home can be exciting and fun. Making sure that your new home, and its surroundings, meet your needs will ensure that the excitement and fun last long after the first few weeks.
