5 Ways to Keep Your Pool Safe and Prevent Accidents

A pool is a very fun thing to have at home. Apart from how enjoyable it is to get into the water and practice all your moves, it can be very therapeutic and beneficial for your health. It’s one of the most recommended sports for children to be introduced to, so it’s definitely something to consider if you don’t already have one.

The benefits of a pool will only be enjoyed if it’s kept safe though. An unsecured pool can be very dangerous for children and even adults, so you should take all the steps you can to keep yours safe. Here are five ways you can do that effectively and affordably:

1. Install a Safety Cover

There are safety covers available for every kind of pool, including above-ground ones. They look like giant trampolines and essentially just cover the pool when it’s not going to be in use for an extended period of time. With one, you’ll be sure that no one can fall into your pool, especially children who might stray while trying to explore their surroundings.

2. Install a Pool Safety Fence

In many towns across the United States, it is now a requirement that pool owners maintain a fence around their pools. That goes to show how important and effective it is. Even if your locality does not require you to have a fence, you should get one just to make sure you have as much protection in place as possible. Generally, the recommendations are that the fence should be at least 48″ inches high and have child-resistant features such as self-closing and self-latching, and be sure to get it installed by experts like Pool Guard USA so you’ll be confident about its durability.

3. Get an Alarm System

If you have alarms on your front door and other areas of your home that require increased security, you should also consider installing one around your pool. You can choose from a perimeter alarm, pressure alarms and gate alarms. The first two will let you know when anyone passes through a laser-designated perimeter or when anything over a certain weight falls into the water, respectively. The last will let you know when the pool gate is being opened.

4. Buy Safety Equipment

There are many devices that are used by public pools to ensure that they don’t have to bear liability for any accidents. You should take a cue from them and purchase quality equipment that can be used to stop accidents from occurring or resulting in serious injury. Some of the ones to prioritize are lifesavers that come with ropes for pulling a drowning person to safety, and a shepherd’s hook that does a similar job but is attached to a pole instead.

5. Have Adults Watching

If there are people in the vicinity, the odds of a person drowning will be reduced drastically, and adult supervision is especially important when it’s children who are swimming. Always plan to have at least one or two people at the pool who are capable of taking steps to rescue a child in danger. They don’t have to be swimming, as long as they remain alert to what’s going on in the pool.
