How to Cut Detailed Saw Patterns In Your Woodwork?

Cutting patterns are easier said than done. Obviously, cutting of patterns in woodwork requires so much work and patience. It is not as easy as one two three because each saw patterns are made for specific purposes.  Every pattern created must be strong and stable enough for someone equipped with knowledge and patience to cut the intricately-detailed saw patterns accurately.

The process of cutting detailed saw patterns can be done by studying first the cuts that you are going to undertake on the wood. The sequence of the cuts shall be familiarized, and a draft of the steps to undergo must be made before cutting the patterns. In successfully cutting these saw patterns, all you need is a high dose of patience not to lose control and focus through the delicate cutting of patterns. You also need to learn a few effective tricks to pass the saw pattern cutting with flying colors. The following tips are clearly explained below.

Drill and Cut Flawlessly

Observe and plan. These two operational terms are very important in drilling and cutting. It is very necessary that you take a good look at the pattern. Observe where curves, edges, lines started and where it ended. If you need to observe again, do not hesitate to do it. You need to have a good plan after observing the pattern. The next thing, draft a plan as to which area of the pattern you need to start. Do not forget to take note of the portion where it needs more precision in the cutting as it is the most delicate.

Moreover, exercise extra caution in using the drill. Take note; there are patterns that are too complex and have very thin cuts. Position your drill bit perpendicularly and control the drill so as not to destroy the pattern. Do not get overwhelmed in drilling, follow the pattern and stay focused. Research on different drilling tips and techniques to boost your knowledge and confidence in drilling.

It is important to use the correct drill bit for specific kinds of cuts. The brad point bit is said to be an ideal drill to use in woodwork because of its design. It has a sharp center point that is best to be used in marking the layout. However, others prefer the spiral blade drill because of its clear advantage to other drills while others take it for granted.

One of the advantages of spiral blade drill is that it can provide 360 degrees cut. It saves the driller from the hassle of turning the wood in a different direction and changing its position. It also has the ability to create very tight inside corners. It can create a corner with a radius of up to .012. That is indeed interesting.

Additionally, you can save more time using a spiral blade in drilling because you need not rotate the wood due to its 360-degree feature. Contrary to some people’s opinion regarding the difficulty of handling and using a spiral blade, like any other drill, it takes only some time to appreciate its perks. It would be best to stack a piece of wood when cutting using a spiral blade if you really find it difficult to use. It will help you gain more control over the drill. The sloppiness caused by using spiral blade can be best solved by just cleaning the back of the piece later.

While it is true that spiral blades are not easy to operate, you can always take the time to study, familiarize and have the equipment. In due time, you will discover strategies to use spirals to your advantage.

Even if you need to carefully keep track with the pattern you have in cutting, you must always remember that a pattern serves only as a guidebook, not a rulebook. Therefore, you are free to create some changes in cutting as long as it still follows the pattern.

Most importantly, you need to exercise extra care in drilling in order not to harm yourself especially your piece. Here are some of the safety precautions to avoid unnecessary accidents when drilling.

Focus. Forget about everything but drilling. Keep in mind the steps you had drafted before you started drilling. Rest if you need in order not to compromise your work. Working without proper rest could lead to disaster.

Prepare. Prepare everything that you need, from the tools to other equipment. This will give you enough time to check your work before starting. Cramming in getting a delicate job done is a surefire catastrophe.

Tidy Up. Drilling can be a messy job but that does is not an excuse to have a disorganized working area. To avoid unnecessary interruptions when working, make sure that the table is clean and all the equipment are in their proper places.

Safety First. Safety first before anything else. Make sure to wear the necessary protective gears such as safety glasses, close-toe shoes, and comfortable and fitting clothes. Loose clothes may interfere when you are working.

Organize tools. In order to save time, place the tools and equipment you need in a container near you. You will not only save time but are mostly to have a continuous and smooth sailing work.

Check your mood. Make sure you are in the mood to work. Working even when you’re tired is one way closer to destroying your piece. Do not work for the sake of working.

Cut a Long Piece Like a Pro

In order not to break the long piece while cutting it, you need to use the blade like a pencil. Then, carefully trace the pattern in 360 degrees. You can also try altering and transferring directions upon cutting the pattern. Sometimes following a single direction for cutting the pattern gives you a weak piece because you were not able to create support. Think about changing your direction while cutting a waste portion of the wood then cut it on the opposite side. You surely have those long pieces safe when you cut in one direction. In cutting, patience is indeed a virtue.

The long straight lines are believed to be the most difficult to cut. You need to incorporate both speed and accuracy to cut a long straight line successfully. A packing tape will be necessary to serve as a support for almost completing the cut. Make sure to use the transparent one, so you will still be able to see the pattern while cutting.

Remove the Dust

It would be best to use an air compressor in removing the dust on both sides of the completed pattern. You can choose to separate the piece from a stack or keep them together depending on your assessment of its strength. A window screen will be necessary to be placed behind the piece to let the air and the dust pass through. Add some support when the need arises. Do not forget to lower the pressure of the compressor for the piece’s safety.

Deal with Fuzzies

It is unavoidable for the spiral to leave fuzzies on your piece so make sure to get rid of it. These fuzzies should be taken care of immediately. You can remove fuzzies by torching it down using a bernzomatic plumbers torch. Never forget to use a piece of wood to cover the piece or else you might get the piece burned down to ashes. Move the torch around the piece’s surface as fast as you can to avoid the heat penetrating through the wood thus, destroying your work. If by mistake you happen to discover charring on the piece, use sandpaper to remove it. You can use the compressor again, in the same manner, you use it in the first step and remove the new set of fuzzies.

A good piece of woodwork deserves nothing but the best frame. Never let a poor choice of frame destroys the beauty of your piece. Select a frame that best fits the theme of the piece or that complements and even beautifies it. A perfect frame is the best finishing touch for a magnificent work.

adhesive

Pattern Adhesive

A 3M super 77 spray adhesive is indispensable to secure the patterns. If there are lots of thin areas in the design of the patterns like feathers, make sure to have a thick coat for that. You would not want to mess you’re almost completed work by not using an adhesive. There are tendencies that you might accidentally cut the pattern. One more thing, make sure that a heavy coating is not going to cause you a bigger problem when it’s time to remove it. The residue left by the adhesive on the wood should be taken care of by carefully rubbing it until it is gradually removed. Handle the piece with extra care upon cleaning the excess residue.

Advantage of Stacking

The major benefit of stacking is saving almost seventy-five percent of your production time. The thick feel caused by stacking while cutting is a source of good support and in a way, decreases the aggressiveness of the cut caused by the drill.
