You Just Bought A House. Now What Else Should You Consider?

Investing in your first home is an incredibly rewarding experience. Now that you have closed on your new home, you have a lot to take care of. You have a key in your hand, but now you have to unpack various boxes, move in furniture and get settled in. This is a big commitment that you have taken on, but it can be very rewarding as well. There will be ongoing maintenance that needs to occur, as well as repairs, unexpected circumstances, etc. Let’s take a closer look at some of the other considerations you must think about now that you own your own house.

Think About Insurance

While you never want something like this to happen, there are house fires, water damage, smoke damage, and other emergencies that you can’t see coming. Before you signed the final papers letting you into your home, you had to secure homeowners insurance. Make sure that now that you are in your home, you understand and educate yourself on your homeowner’s policy. You want to make sure that you have more than enough coverage. You also want to make sure you have a log of your valuable items that are stored in your home. If something does happen, you will have a list of big-ticket items that you can receive compensation for. Just be sure not to keep your list saved to only a computer in your home. If that gets destroyed as well, you won’t have a list to utilize.

Plan Ahead For Maintenance

Owning your own home is much different than living in an apartment. You are now going to be responsible for the ongoing maintenance that comes with owning a home. It is important to understand what maintenance needs to be done and when. Keeping up on everything will prevent major repairs or cleanup jobs down the road. Make a list of the various things in your home that need to be maintained. This might be cleaning your gutters, changing the furnace filter in your HVAC system or mowing the lawn. Make sure you get a good schedule going so nothing gets forgotten. There are many ways to stay organized. You can make a spreadsheet, label a calendar, or utilize an app on your smart phone.

Have Funds Ready

While your homeowner’s insurance will help cover any expenses or valuables that are lost during an emergency, there are repairs that are not covered by your insurance. Make sure you have a fund set aside for any major repairs that might need to get done, that you didn’t see coming up. This might be a new roof, water damage in a bathroom or a clogged sewer in your yard that needs to be dug up.

Think About Security

In order to protect your valuables, your home and your family, think about various ways you can increase the overall security in your home. There are many security companies that can install a

security system in your home.
There are also plenty of great DIY Home Security items that you can utilize on your home. There are window alarms, motion detectors, cameras and much more. You want to make sure that you and your family feel safe where you are residing and this can be done quite affordably, if you do a little bit of research.

Now that you own a home it is important to plan ahead and protect your investment. A good plan is to set aside a certain portion of your paycheck every pay period. That money will slowly build up and it can be used towards any housing expenses you may encounter. If the money builds up with no need to use it, you can always place an extra amount on the principle of your mortgage to reduce the overall loan amount. Now that you own a home, take the appropriate steps to ensure you protect your investment.
