5 Tips To Remember On Moving Day

Written by Posted On Thursday, 26 July 2018 21:39

When moving to a new home, you've got plenty on your mind. As a result, it can be difficult to remember everything that needs to be done to ensure the day goes as smoothly as possible. To guarantee nothing is forgotten, it's a good idea to make a checklist  containing many of the most important tasks that must be done. If you're in the midst of preparing for moving day, here are five tips to keep in mind so that you'll have few if any unexpected and unpleasant surprises along the way.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
When you move into a new home, always make sure you've got plenty of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to go around. From bedrooms and kitchens to basements and utility rooms, install a new detector wherever you think it's needed. And remember that once they are installed, test them each month to make sure they are always working properly. Additional details about this can be found at www.moving.com/tips/moving-day-checklist/.

Trash Bags
Once you arrive at your new home, chances are you'll be doing plenty of cleaning. As a result, you'll need a good supply of trash bags to collect all the dirty paper towels and other garbage. Along with the trash bags, it's probably a good idea to have one or two large trash cans as well, since they will allow you to store the garbage until it's picked up.

New Door Locks
Once you're given the keys to your new home, don't get complacent. Since it's possible other people may also have keys to the home, it's always best to buy some new locks for all your front and back doors, then make an appointment with a locksmith to get them installed. If possible, try to schedule the locksmith to arrive on your moving-in day, or at worst a few days later.

Light Bulbs and Batteries
If there is one thing you don't want to have happen, it's arriving at your new home and finding out you've got no batteries or light bulbs for lamps and other accessories. Therefore, make a trip to your local big-box store a day or two before you move to stock up on these items. To avoid any problems, make a list of exactly which types of batteries and bulbs you need, which will ensure nothing is forgotten.

Box Cutter
As anyone who has moved to a new home can attest, the first few days have the house filled with boxes that need to be unpacked. To make the unpacking process a bit easier and faster, always make sure you purchase a box cutter to have with you when you reach your destination. Since most boxes will be heavily-taped, using a box cutter will make it much easier to get the boxes open, and help you start making your new home look and feel just the way you want.

By keeping these tips in mind, moving day should not only be a very exciting event, but also one that produces few unexpected surprises along the way.
