Living in a port or harbor can be exciting albeit challenging. To ease movement, a berth is created which is used to moor vessels while away from sea. It is designed with a vertical front which ensures a boat or any other vessel is held in place.

Apartment with berths, like any other housing designs, are important especially to residents of ports or harbors, this architectural design is usually put in place in these areas for easy loading and unloading of persons or cargoes while the vessel is moored. With its many benefits, some challenges are encountered. In spite of such challenges, there are numerous reasons why you need a berth in your housing structure, here are some of them:

1. Convenience

Convenience cannot be underestimated. Easy boarding and unloading is guaranteed with an apartment designed to have this facility. This will eventually reduce the amount of stress needed in traveling and moving your vessel to a storage yard as you can moveyour vessel with ease and set on the next task at hand.

2. Cost

You stand to save money from transporting your boat with a towing van, from additional fuel cost or a storage house when your housing has a plan put in place to accommodate your vessel.

3. Luxury

Marina berths ensure leisure crafts owners get the desired comfort associated with moving on and off their boats. Recreational crafts of varying shapes and sizes can fit in such structures in Marinas as they are designed with modular capabilities.

4. Time

Time is essential, you could either be journeying to or from the storage house of your vessel, toand from your residence or any other place. An apartment designed with mooring in view no doubt saves time.

An apartment around a port or harbor apparently needs a berth. Knowing what type you need for your housing can be challenging as well. Here are some types to bear in mind when considering what type you can employ based on your cargo type:

1. General

This is used in handling vessels designed with their own lifting gear and are commonly found in smaller ports for small shipments of cargo sizes.

2. Marina

This is put in place for leisure craft owners to enter or alight from their crafts. They are usually found alongside pontoons. In tidal areas, the shore can be assessed through hinged bridges. It is common to find a specialized equipment that keeps boats out of water, preventing any organic growth and negative effect of wave action.

3. Lay

Idle vessels also have structures designed for them. Designed with little access to land, they serve as intermediate points for vessels between operation and mothballing at offshore moorings.

4. Lay-by

Although similar to layberths, they lay-by structure differs as it can feature amenities for fuel, crew utilities and provisions. It is used for short term keeping of vessels until a loading or discharging site is available.

5. Liquid

Designed for handling products related to oil and gas, they are found off shore to ensure a safe operational zone away from the on-goings in a general port. Loading arms which contain pipelines are used to load such vessels and pipelines are used to offload cargoes on shore.

6. Bulk

These are multipurpose structures as they can handle liquid or dry cargoes. Storage facilities are found along the site.
