End of Tenancy Cleaning Guide for Tenants during Move-Out

If you are used to the concept of renting out homes, then you would know what end of tenancy cleaning is. But if this is your first time renting out, you should probably spend some time to understand the concept of this end of tenancy cleaning.

Basically, when you move out of your rented home, you will need to clean everything from the top to the bottom and make sure that the condition of the home is in the shape as it was rented out to you in the beginning.

Why do you need end of lease cleaning services when moving out?

Generally, when you move into a new house, it is given to you in a clean and neat condition and the landlords expect it to be maintained in the same way. Some people do not clean the house regularly and even if they did, they would just do the basic cleaning and leave out the detailed cleaning.

Over the period of time, this may result in collecting dust, dirt and a lot of other undesirable elements in the house which may become harder to clean. For that reason, landlords have now started to include the rule of ‘end of lease cleaning’ to get back the house in the same condition as it was given in.

The only reason that tenants take effort, time and even a bit of money to clean the home before moving out are for the deposit of the bond money signed earlier. If the house isn’t as clean as it was expected to be, it can eat away a big portion of the deposit or in some cases when the home is in the worst condition, it can eat up the whole deposit. So to get the money totally as it is, sparkly clean is what you need to go for.

Few points to consider about the end of tenancy cleaning

  • Most of the times, you are eligible to carry out your own end of lease cleaning, but in certain cases, the landlord may ask you to use third-party services for specific cleaning like for carpet cleaning, oven cleaning, etc. Therefore, read your agreement once before you start your moving out process.

  • The refund of your deposit amount depends on the condition of the house after you have vacated it.

  • If you are planning to do it by yourself, know that it takes two professional cleaners to work for a whole day to clean a complete house and it takes an average of 4 hours to clean a big room. So plan your cleaning accordingly and spread it out so that you can be as elaborate as possible.

  • Most landlords will demand to see the same level of hygiene in the home as it was when you first rented it out.

How to do end of tenancy cleaning?

There are three options to do end of tenancy cleaning.

The first option is to do the cleaning all by yourself. This is advisable if you already have participated in the end of tenancy cleaning and know a few nuances and trade tricks to get the work done efficiently.

The second option is to do most of the cleaning by yourself and hire third-party cleaners to do specific cleaning like carpet cleaning, rug cleaning, furniture cleaning, etc. By this way, you can get your work done in much lesser time and also concentrate on keeping clean the major objects that your landlord will probably go over with a fine-toothed comb.

By this way, you will have to spend a little out of your pocket for the professional cleaners. It is very easy to find cleaners in all major cities of Australia. If you are from Melbourne, you can just Google, ‘end of lease cleaners Melbourne’ and get some good suggestions for cleaners and get the work done from the comfort of your home.

The third option is to outsource the entire job of cleaning to a well-experienced cleaning company who will clean your house and every single element in it with utmost carefulness. By this way, you will need to spend a considerable amount from your pocket but when you do not have a lot of time at hand and a large amount of deposit is at stake, this could be the only way to go.

If you are going to do the job by yourself, then keep the following points in your mind.

The Walls

The walls of the house in all the rooms have to be cleaned properly with a wet cloth and with the appropriate cleaning products. Pay more attention to the walls of your bathroom as it is more prone to getting sediment on it.

If there are scuff marks on the wall, try to remove them and in case there are many visible marks on the wall created after you have moved in, it is best to paint them over with an emulsion of the same colour. Else, the landlord may paint the walls and charge you more for it. So it is better to get the work done by yourself.

The Floor

Every inch of floor in all rooms have to be cleaned properly. If the living room floor is carpeted, clean it with a vacuum cleaner. Look for any spilled things on the carpet and try to clean them with a carpet cleaner. If that doesn’t work out, you will need to hire the services of a carpet cleaning company.

In the bathroom, clean every inch of the floor with soapy water and get rid of all the dirt from it. Similarly, the kitchen is another place that needs major attention. The floor and the slabs of the kitchen are bound to get grimmer and greaser; so take out time to clean them well.

The Windows

Clean up all your windows with a nice cloth and soapy water. If there are dirt and stains that are difficult to remove, then you can use vinegar and alcohol and clean it over with a sponge. Don’t forget to clean the inside of the windows as well as the outside.

If there have been new cracks in the window panes, then make sure to replace them. While moving into your house, make sure to check all the windows for already present cracks so that you don’t need to compensate for that when you are moving out.

The Furniture

Clean the furniture of the house with a furniture cleaning liquid based on the type of material it is made of. Pay attention to the dining table and look for any spilled marks.

If you have pets in your house, look for scratch marks on them on the furniture. If the scratch marks are too severe, then you will need to do damage control. If you have a child at your home, you may want to check the stuffing inside the sofa and beds to see if it is in the proper condition or if there are any colour markings on the furniture. It is best to complete your furniture cleaning by painting it over with varnish.

The Cupboards, Shelves and Wash Basins

Clean the cupboards with a cleaning liquid and don’t forget to clean the cupboard knobs too. If there is a mirror that comes with the cupboard or the shelf, wipe the mirror with a wet cloth or a cleaning fluid to get it sparkling again. Clean all your wash bins with the proper cleaning fluid and remove any blockages in the pipelines.
