Finding a Home With Sufficient Space For Food Storage

Searching for a Home

The first question you need when starting to search for a home is whether the home is something you can not only afford, but also maintain long-term either by yourself or with other family members. This is an important step of the process because if you share a home with friends or family, you will need enough space and be able to maintain that space together. On the other hand, if you are going to be living in the home alone, it is important to make sure you will not be the only one managing a rather large home. Thinking through this makes the process easier on all tenants.

Requirements for a Home

In order to find the house that best suits you, you should find a home that offers sufficient water and food storage. This especially applies if you live in a rural property since they require more water and food storage on average than a normal household.

How do you know the requirements?

You can know the water requirements of your property by following the steps that Kevin, a lifestyle property owner, took:

1. Perform a water audit

2. A water audit gives a property owner an outline of their needs as far as how much water needs to be produced and whether or not the food and water supply are sufficient to continue functioning properly.

3. How will the home function during a drought or flood?

4. Knowing just how to cope properly with a flood or drought will help in deciding which home is right for you. If your home is not well equipped to handle such situations because you will have a shortage of space for supplies, then it may be time to consider a new home.

5. Determine how much food you will need

6. If your family is bigger in size, you will need more space for storage and, therefore, housing that provides it.

How can you meet those requirements?

If your home does not meet the requirements, particularly for storing water, then you could investing in a water tank. If you invest in and install water storage tanks, then you will be able to make up for any insufficient storage and supply concerns within your home. This will best support you especially if you live in a rural area, but can also benefit urban and suburban lifestyles.

If your home does not meet the requirements for food storage, then you should:

1. Find a different home that offers a pantry

2. Pantries are closets that lie in your kitchen for non-refrigerated food storage. Most items that go in here include bread, condiments not requiring refrigeration, and rice. These are a feature that benefit the tenant of the home for no expense at all. If you could find a house that provides this, you won’t need to take any other actions to meet the requirements.

3. Find a home that offers a refrigerator and freezer

Most homes on the market won’t have the appliances you will need for sufficient food storage, such as freezers and fridges. If you can, try finding a home that offers these as they are almost mandatory considering the importance they hold in food and water storage.

If you can’t find a house with any of these appliances already available, it would be best to:

1. Buy a mini fridge or deep freezer

2. This is an alternative to searching for houses that offer the appliances you need, and only requires a one-time investment. You will be able to bring this appliance with you in the future.

3. Utilize cabinets and counters

4. Cabinets and counters are sufficient enough to provide space for a single family, so if you are a single family and can’t seem to use any of the aforementioned alternatives, I would suggest turning to these.
