Looking after a loved one with Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease can be very difficult and taxing. Looking for long-term care options can make your life easier, especially during the later stages.

Most long-term care options for senior citizens with dementia offer best care to cater to every requirement of such individuals. It is just a matter of exploring these options and then discussing it up with your family members, until you make your decision. Here are a few options you can look into:

Assisted living

Individuals in the early stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease can find it easier to adjust in assisted living facilities that provide continuing retirement care. They don’t have much of medical facilities; but they do provide intensive support to help the residents perform their daily living activities such as:

  1. Cooking
  2. Housekeeping
  3. Managing medications
  4. Managing money
  5. Shopping
  6. Using appliances

Apart from these they also offer certain extracurricular activities to keep the residents busy during their leisure time. There are also those that offer memory care facilities, both part of larger assisted living communities and as stand-alone facilities, that will help your loved one with dementia get the care they need.

If the dementia has progressed to a stage where your loved one is not able to perform his or her tasks independently, you may have to look for facilities that offer help with bathing, toileting, dressing and grooming, eating, and moving about. In such programs your loved one will be able to live comfortably and interact with the co-residents, while availing the benefits of various services such as personal care, meals, transportation, security, and meals. If you are looking at having a pet living with your loved one, you may have to look for pet friendly dementia facilities.

Skilled Nursing Facilities

Skilled nursing facilities are nursing homes that provide more extensive medical care for senior citizens with dementia. Such facilities would be apt for individuals who are in the later stages of Dementia or Alzheimer’s with serious problems with daily living and health. These are ideal for:

  • People who need Constant supervision
  • People who may pose a danger through their behavior or actions
  • People who make it difficult to be adequately hydrated, nourished or healthy
  • People who are unable to carry out any of their daily living activities

Caring for your loved one is definitely something that you would like to do, by yourself. In fact you may find it guilty to leave them in such a facility. However, there are a few situations where you may be forced to take such decisions.

  • You may have to look for a senior living with dementia facility if your own health is failing because of caring for your loved one
  • In case you have experienced some kind of injury that is making it difficult for you to provide the care for your loved one
  • If you are unable to cater to the requirements of your loved one and make sure he or she is as active and healthy as possible.

Putting your loved one in a senior living with dementia is not just about making your life easier. It is also about giving the best care for your loved one;it is about making sure all of his or her requirements are taken care of in the best way possible. Such facilities have experienced staff members who know how to take care of people with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and they provide the best care possible to make sure they remain healthy.
