Energy Saving in Office - Cutting Down on Energy Consumption

As conscious as businesses tend to be about their profits, most businesses tend to forget how energy efficiency also affects their bottom line. If you're looking into energy saving in office, these simple tips will guide you to saving every month on electricity bills.

Lighting

  • Reduce the number of inefficient light bulbs in the office. More is not always better, and they could just be costing you.
  • Don't leave lights on when they're not needed. It's a complete myth that turning off lights and turning them back on increases power usage. So when it's daylight, enjoy the sun instead. Keep the outer security lights off during the day. You won't just be saving your utility bill, you'd also be extending the lives of the lamps.
  • While replacing lamps, find out about newer technology that saves energy. For example, fluorescent lamps use less energy than incandescent lamps, so if you have any, replace them. Even amongst fluorescent lamps, there are better energy savers. Replace your T-12 with T-8 fixtures, and change magnetic ballast to electronic ones.
  • Replace incandescent "EXIT" signs with LED ones - as they can save you up to one-tenth of the power used by incandescent ones.

Cooling & Heating

  • Utilize "free cooling" by allowing breeze flow through the office (during fall and spring) instead staying cooped up with air conditioners.
  • If you're due for a change in equipment, consider replacing your HVAC units with higher energy efficiency ratio (EER) of at least 10.5. Make sure your contractor does a "Manual N" computation to determine the best size for your building.
  • You can cut down on energy usage by installing variable speed drives on very large motors.
  • During winters, always lower the thermostats before leaving the building, and turn it up a bit during the summer. This is to prevent the thermostat from cooling or heating an unoccupied building.
  • If employees constantly adjust temperatures, whenever they want, think about controlling access to the thermostat by installing a locking device or using a programmable thermostat.
  • One preventive measure against power consumption is to keep your HVAC filters and units clean. Basically, regular maintenance. This is to detect leakages early that could be causing the building to heat or cool slower than normal.

Office Equipment

  • One long term plan to consider is to replace working desktops with laptops. Laptops use just about 10% of the power desktops use.
  • Consider installing plug load controllers. They automatically turn off unused devices - lights, fans, monitors and so forth. This is to prevent forgetfulness and thus waste of commercial electricity.
  • Technology keeps getting better, so whenever you need to replace an office equipment, find out if there are better energy saving technologies available. They might cost you a ton in the short term, but they make a worthy long term energy saving in office.

Getting Employees Involved

  • Most of your efforts will be in vain if the core users aren't involved. So teach your employees to be conscious about their energy habits. Ask them to contribute ideas if possible.
  • Have someone responsible for implementing these ideas so they don't end being just ideas.

A lot of businesses tend to overlook how drastic their energy consumption can affect their bottom line. Becoming more energy efficient and learning energy saving in office isn't rocketscience. These tips will be able to not only reduce commercial business' energy consumption, but it'll also save business owners on electricity bills in the long run.
