Can you help your bank account by being energy conscious?

Written by Posted On Monday, 29 October 2018 10:03

Sustainable energy is the best choice for the environment. We have all heard of climate change and how it may affect us all. Before its effects become a serious day to day reality, changes in the way we use and produce energy are necessary. Besides the environment, being conscious about energy can also be a profitable choice for your bank account. Eventually you will spend less on your energy bill. So let us go over the things you can do to lower your usage of energy in your home.

Solar panels

An investment that seems rather obvious these days is the purchase of solar panels. Often these panels are fixed to roofs of houses to collect energy from sunlight. Solar panels are not cheap, though you may be eligible for subsidies if you choose to invest in them. After you have had the solar panels installed, interesting things happen to the counter on your electricity meter. On a sunny day, you can see the number going down rather than up. This way, you are compensating for the electricity you have been using in your home. That means that at the end of the year, your electricity bill will be lower. It will take some years before this fully compensates your investment, but it is definitely going to.

Review usage of electricity

Being more conscious of how much electricity you use during the day is a helpful step towards reducing it. Take a look at your electronic devices. Do you have a personal computer that is on all the time? Does it need to be? Is your phone done charging but is your charger still plugged into the socket? Unplug it. Do you often have the television on even though you are not paying attention to it? Just turn it off. These simple things are easy ways to save on your usage of energy and keep some of the money in your pocket.

Cooling down and warming up

Keeping your house at a pleasant temperature is often a source of high energy usage. Air conditioning devices use a lot of electricity while trying to keep the room cool and taking humidity out of the air. Instead, you could close your curtains when the sun is about to hit your window. That way you keep out some of the heat. Or make sure there is no wet laundry hung out to dry inside on warm days, because that adds to the humidity. If it is cold inside, it is tempting to simply turn up the heater. Heating systems often run on gas, which is both expensive and a non-sustainable form of energy. Check the house to see if you can detect places where there is a draft. There may be holes and gaps that could be fixed. If you do so, some of the cold could be kept out. If you do not need to use the heating system as much, you will surely notice this on your gas bill.

Behaviour

Being more energy efficient requires a change of behaviour. Small changes can help, and larger adjustments to your house can also be helpful if you are willing to make those. It can be quite an investment, but it will pay off eventually.
