Bedroom Remodels Without Demolition

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 27 November 2018 00:29

Researchers estimate that you can spend up to a third of your life asleep. Doesn’t it make sense to spend that amount of time in a room that you love?

Luckily remodeling your bedroom doesn’t need to cost you a fortune. It can be considerably cheaper than changing a bathroom or refitting your kitchen. Often all that’s required is a little cosmetic work, some creative thinking and a little ‘elbow grease’.

Planning the Remodel

Before you start making any changes, sit down and do a little soul searching (you could include partner or family) about what you want. What style are you after? Is the room too dark? Is it too loud? Can furniture be rearranged, or does it need to be replaced? Consider what you use your room for. Is it strictly for sleeping or do you work in it too?

The answers to these questions will help you make the right design choices going forward.

Step #1 Organize

It's probably not something you are looking forward to, but the first thing on your list for your bedroom remodel should be to organize and purge. This means starting with your closet and working your way out, determining what you want to keep, what you want to sell, and what you may want to donate.

Anything you keep needs to find its own little place inside your remodeled room or somewhere else in the house. For instance, maybe you want to hold on to your ball dress but it’s taking up valuable space in your closet? Consider vacuum sealing it and putting it into safe storage so you can reclaim your new, clutter-free bedroom.

Think about what you haven't used in the past 2-3 months and consider getting rid of it.

Once you have discarded some of your unwanted items it may be a great time to take stock of the things you have kept and get contents insurance. Protecting the items most important to you is a smart idea.

Step #2 Paint

Painting your bedroom is probably the quickest and most affordable way to completely change its look and feel. Maybe you're tired of the standard beige or looking to move away from an overpowering color. In this case, picking a soothing and gentle color could be the right option.

In your bedroom, you can also try paint tricks - like bringing your ceiling color an inch down onto the walls to make it seem higher.  An accent wall across from the door can help draw the eye in and make it feel larger.

Step #3 The Windows

The next big change you can make in your bedroom relatively inexpensively is finding the right window coverings. Some nice pull down black out blinds can help keep out noise and street lights while also looking classier and cleaner. Plus, they'll help insulate your room from the cold or heat.

Consider getting curtains and following the age-old tip of finding a pair that's slightly larger than the window itself. You could try making sure they are long enough to reach from a few inches above your window all the way to the floor in order to draw the eye in and up, making it feel more spacious.

Step #4 Decorate the Walls

Try hanging some artwork that you love or find nice silk rugs, sculptures, or drawings that will help to break up large blank walls to add some of your own personality. Making your own light boxes and going DIY with bargain furniture and decor can really dress up your room.

Step #5 Choose the Right Bedding

Sleeping comfortably is typically the most important thing factor for your bedroom, so allocate a portion of your budget to your bedding, rather than making it an afterthought.

Try layers rather than a single thick (or thin) bedding set so that you can adjust it as the seasons go by.

You might also consider decorative pillows, a bedskirt, and even a nice bed frame to further dress up your room. Stick with simple patterns and colors for the bulk of your bedding and then dress up the look with a throw blanket and some pillows.

Step #6 Light It Up

Good lighting can make a real difference to the ambience of your bedroom and whether it feels open and spacious or dark and cramped. Recessed lights are fine for the living room but can use a lot of electricity and may seem a little harsh in a bedroom.

Changing out your light bulbs for brighter, more energy efficient bulbs can help make it feel brighter. You can also tone down the light with a dimmer so that you can adjust lighting as needed. Bedside lamps can also help spot light certain areas when needed.

Step #7 Find Furniture That Fits

Unless you are going for a complete overhaul and have the budget to match - keep new furniture as a last resort. Sometimes a little TLC is all that is needed.

Can you give an old dresser a varnish or new coat of paint? Would painting your headboard add a little inspiration or pizazz? Sometimes all that is required for that old recliner is a nice throw or coloured pillow.
