Whether you bought a new place or are moving into another rented apartment, don’t let the stress of relocating discourage you from improving your new home. Of course, there will always be the massive to-do list and relocation tasks such as packing, hiring a moving company and so on, but there are also a few things you should do to put your new home in top shape and bring it up to the standard you are used to. In fact, home improvements and renovations should be handled before you move into your new place finally.

If you intend to move soon, here are essential home improvements you should get out of the way before your actual move date.

Painting

This is one of those home improvement tasks you should definitely do before moving into your new house. Imagine having to move furniture about before you paint a room simply because you skipped this essential task in the beginning.

Therefore, unless you like the look and feel of your new place just the way it is, you should definitely invest in a little paint to improve the shine of your new home. Thankfully, painting is something you can do on your own as a DIY project in your spare time. But you can also hire a professional painter to do a good job for you.

When painting your new place, be sure to use a colour scheme that will complement your furniture and fittings for the interior and external elements for the exterior.

Make it energy efficient

Energy bills can be a huge problem in a house that is not winter-proof. Thankfully, it is an easy thing to improve the energy efficiency of your new place before moving in.

There are several things you can do to make your new home more energy-efficient, such as searching for and sealing all sources of leaks in the house, replacing the windows and doors with double or triple glazed glasses, and installing house insulation.

This is also a good opportunity to replace the furnace filter, insulate the pipes and attics, as well as make any necessary ventilation and source of natural light changes you may need.

Replace exterior locks

You never know who had access to your new house in the past or where spare keys may be found lying, therefore before you move in, it is important that you replace all the exterior locks and keys to your new place.

In fact, this is definitely one of the first things you should be because you may need to store a few things in the house – such as materials you need for renovating, and these materials can be stolen by people who have keys to the house.

Even if the previous owners appear trustworthy, don’t take the risk. Give yourself some peace of mind and hire a trustworthy locksmith to replace the locks and keys. This way, you will have full control of your property and know who has access to your house.

Repair floors or install carpets

Unless you are moving into a brand new house, chances are the floor of your new place will need some work, and leaving this until later will only cause you further inconvenience in future. The best solution is to get the floors worked on before you move into your place, so that not only will there be no furniture to move about, there will also be no one in residence to worry about.

Depending on the type and state of the floor of your new place, you can consider refinishing it, re-sanding it, repairing it, or simply installing floor carpets.

If you choose to repair or refinish the floors, you may want to focus on the parts of the house you will be using immediately you move in, so that you can reduce the expenses. However, if you can afford to do everywhere at the same time, by all means, go ahead as this will even be more cost-effective for you.

Consider landscaping

It is also a good idea to improve the curb appeal of your new place by doing some landscaping. In fact, landscaping will not just beautify your new home; it will also boost the value of your property. Experts suggest that spending as little as 5% of the value of your home on landscaping can bring in as much as 150% returns on investment.

While you can actually do minor landscaping after you have moved into your new place, major work like removing trees, installing a deck, and so on will be easy to start and finish before anyone occupies the house. Plus, all the waste material can be disposed off before you move in with your family.

Install extra storage

One of the problems most homeowners face is the scarcity of usable storage. However, even when it is possible to create storage in the house, people are reluctant to do so as this will throw off their routine and cause great inconvenience. Which is why before you move in is a great time to creating extra space in your new home.

So, whether it is converting the attic or installing extra cabinets in the kitchen or a vanity in the bathroom, you should get this done and out of the way before you move into your new home.
