If you are a fan of vintage furniture, you must know the right way to protect it and clean it in order to enjoy its beauty for a long time. The maintenance of antique furniture can be quite tricky but I can assure you that if you follow a few simple steps carefully, you will become an expert in the cleaning of old surfaces.

Being able to take a proper care of your vintage chairs, tables, chest or any other type of furniture will pay off tremendously. The great condition of your furniture will give your home a nice general look and the vintage feel will bring a totally different and interesting atmosphere in it. Not only you will be able to impress other people with the interior of your home, but you will also enjoy the time that you spend in your precious house. Follow these steps and your vintage furniture will always look great.

Examine the surfaces

The first thing that you need to do is to study well the surface of your furniture and the finish that it naturally has. If there are some silver or gold ornaments you should avoid wiping them with a damp cloth or scrubbing way too hard with a brush with stiff bristles. If your furniture is from wooden material you should avoid getting it wet, as the moisture can deform the surface.

When you have chosen the method of cleaning given by cleaning Acton it is always good to test it on a area which is not easy to be seen. Wipe an inner part of the furniture or if you are cleaning a chair, try the solution underneath the seat. Wait for ten to fifteen minutes and if there is no discolouration, the products which you chose are safe for use.

Use mild solutions

I have found that for me the easiest and safest way to clean antique furniture is to dilute a mild liquid soap in water and slightly dampen a cotton cloth with it. If you also want to try this method you should avoid detergents for the dishwasher as they may be way too harsh for the surface of your furniture. I recommend you to use one of those mild soaps which are gentle towards your hands. Dilute it in water and use an old cotton t-shirt to wipe the surface of your furniture. Be careful not to dampen the cloth too much, as this can damage your beautiful antique furniture.

Avoid oils

If you want to make the surface of your vintage furniture more shiny, you might think that using oil-based products will be a good solution to this problem. However, if your furniture is with a wax finish, it is best to use a wax-based cleaning products to polish the surface of your favourite table or chair. By using wax you are not only cleaning the furniture but you are also applying a protective layer of the product which can prevent future scratches or dulling of the shine.

Pay attention of the environment

One of the most important things you should take into consideration is the condition of the room where you keep your vintage furniture. Wooden surfaces can easily be affected by moisture and this is why it is important to control the humidity in your rooms. Using a humidifier is a good solution to this problem. Another thing that you should avoid is placing your favourite antiques in a direct sunlight as UV light may be quite damaging for them.

If you keep these tips in mind, you should enjoy the vintage and original beauty of your furniture for a long time. I can assure you that it is easier to take care of your antiques than you think it is.
