Brad Roemer Looks at the Increasing Number of Food Recalls

Introduction

Is it just Brad Roemer, or have you noticed an increased number of food recalls? Just recently we have had a recall of Romaine lettuce that effects most of North America. We have had beef recalls, Ritz crackers recalls, and even Kellogg’s Honey Smacks recalls. We are not sure what the cause of the increase in the number of recalls, but we are going to explore just what the problem could be.

Why the Increase?

Considering the number of products produced on an annual basis, there really is not that much food that gets recalled, but it seems that it is on the rise as of late. Here are some of the reasons that we can think of that this is happening.

  1. Science – For years now, science has been getting better and better. Think back to about 20 years ago when eggs were good bad for you. Just 20 years before that, they were good for you. Since then, it seems on a biannual basis that they are good or bad. This has to do with the science that we understand on a yearly basis. This could also be the reason why we have so many recalls today. With the advancement of science, we now know better ways of detecting the harmful things in our food.
  2. Industry – Year after year, more and more companies are needed to sustain the amount of food to the world’s population. This means that more and more companies are starting up. As with anything, it takes time for companies to learn what the bigger companies already know. This may mean that some practices that the older businesses have knowledge of, slip through the cracks at a starting company.
  3. Workers – People come from all over the world and they have different health practices. So, what may be bad in one country may not necessarily be bad in another. This can lead to workers that migrate to other countries using practices from their country and contaminating the food supply. This is not aimed at any racial or ethnic group. We have practices in America that simply would not pass inspection in places in Europe and vice versa.
  4. Laws – With new laws being passed all the time, it could be hard for companies to keep up with the newest things they are not allowed to do. Some companies have been doing things a certain way for so long, it is hard to get them to change. At any rate, new laws in the food and drug industry are good. They keep us all healthy.

Conclusion

With all the products being put out, Brad Roemer feel comfortable with the number of recalls. It has not quite passed into an epidemic yet, but if we don’t get it under control soon, it sure can lead to one. Make sure you stay informed and when a recall is issued, heed the warning and discard the food. Some companies will refund your money if you bring it back to the store. Others will just want a receipt and ask you to discard it. At any rate, it is important to follow their directions.
