How To Make Your Yard Ready For The Holidays

‘Tis the season for decorating your outdoor space with lights and festive decor. However, before the fun of decorating begins, you must take a few things into consideration. The first thing that needs to be done to ensure a beautiful display is to prepare your yard. To prep your outdoor space for decorations you should clean up the landscape. Make sure that your yard looks neat. Trim the trees and bushes. Clean off walkways, decks, steps, and porches. You want your landscape to look neat prior to adding any decorations.

Also, Inspect your yard for pest and troublesome insects. Before putting up any decorations examine your yard for evidence of ants or rodents. If you do find any pest or their nests, try to eliminate them as best you can with traps or other pest control products (for more tips check out

Light and Decorate Your Walkway. One of the first things that people will encounter in your outdoor space is the walkway. You should make sure that the path is nicely lit. Many people simply choose to put led lights of various colors along the walkway. For a more intimate decorating idea, you can try using
votive candles to light the walkway. Simply place a votive candle into clear glass jars or votive holders and place them on both sides of your walkway. To add a touch of the holidays, weave in some decorative holly between each candle holder. Your guess will love the cozy inviting feel the candles create.

Decorate Your Porch. Let your porch set the tone for your outdoor display. Add a wreath to the door. Place small trees or topiaries beside your door. Use lace or ribbon to hang ornaments from the eaves of the porch. If your porch has a railing, wrap it in garland and lights. You can also add seasonal pillows to any seating that you have on your porch and place a festive welcome mat in front of your door.
Place lights around the perimeter of the porch to complete this festive look.

Create a Life Size Advent Calendar. All you need to create this life-size calendar is a ladder, address numbers, and garland. Place the ladder up against your home, put greenery and lights around it, and place the address numbers on the ladder in the shape of a tree. The address numbers come in various colors. Choose a color that is consistent with your outdoor theme. As you count down the days of Advent you can remove the numbers from the calendar.

Don’t Forget to Upcycle.
To save time and money, use items that you already have and incorporate them into the decorations. For instance, you can use items such as old wooden crates, skis, and sleds as accent pieces. You can also use non-toxic paint to refresh some of your older decor pieces.
