5 Easy Plumbing Fixes That Don’t Require A Plumber

Written by Posted On Friday, 04 January 2019 00:04

One thing that I hate is having to call out a plumber. I know there are times when this is the only option, but there’s also the fact that they charge a large call-out fee as well.

It is that expense that I hate the most.

But, something even more frustrating is realizing that there was no need to call the plumber. Instead, there are a number of easy plumbing fixes that you can do at home and do so with minimal tools and knowledge.

To give you an example of what’s possible, I’ve listed five easy plumbing fixes below that anybody should be able to carry out.

1. Dealing With A Clogged Drain

There’s nothing worse than discovering a drain is clogged. But before you go and call the plumber, try to fix the problem on your own. Now, if you expected to use drain clearer, then think again as that stuff can actually damage the pipes. Those would only be useful is you live in an area of hardwater which can cause limescale build up. So first, take some measures determining hard water before proceeding with the next step.

Instead, either a plunger or a cable auger is best to push down into the drain and dislodge whatever is causing the blockage. You should also flush your drains out with a vinegar solution to stop the problem building.

2. Dealing With A Running Toilet

The noise of a running toilet can drive anybody insane, but it’s easier to fix than you may have thought. With this, the problem is either with the stop valve being faulty or the floater switch. You can try fiddling around with each part to see if it’s loose, but the easiest repair is to replace the entire kit.

You can buy this from any hardware store and it is fast and easy to install. There will be instructions on the pack but also look at how your current system is constructed to allow you to replicate it later.

3. Installing A Better Showerhead

The modern showerhead is more efficient than the older versions. Also, there are those showerheads that are perfect for reducing the amount of water you use. Installing a new one will be easy no matter which option you choose from your plumbing or hardware store.

For most, it will be a case of unscrewing the showerhead from the hose and replacing it. Do make sure that the connection is tight, or you will lose some pressure. However, that should only take a few minutes to complete the job.

4. Installing A New Faucet

Installing a new faucet may be daunting for some but the truth is that it’s easier than you expect. You will generally find that a new faucet has instructions in the box on how to install it and there are only a few steps. As long as you switch the water supply off first then there should be no problems.

Replacing the entire faucet is often easier to do than trying to strip down the old one and repairing it. Do seek help from someone at your store to check that you have bought the correct one.

5. Caulking The Bathtub Or Shower

Finally, even though caulking the bathtub or shower is an important job, it is still one that can be done by you. Instead, this is all about getting the correct materials as there are a variety of types of caulk that are all designed for different jobs.

You want to check that it is for the bathtub or shower and try to get a quality product as it will last longer. Then, all you need to do is follow the instructions on the product and you have saved yourself a fortune.

Hopefully, these five jobs will give you some idea as to what you can do as opposed to calling for a plumber. However, only carry out these jobs if you feel confident enough to tackle them or you may need to hire someone like Astropak.
