How Buying a Tiny House Can Help You Live Your Best Minimalist Life Now

Since the 2011 release of Marie Kondo’s minimalist manifesto, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, fresh crops of minimalists have begun sprouting up across the globe. From Millenials seeking to declutter their lifestyle to Youtubers promoting the Capsule Wardrobe  to the new Gen Z documentary on the subject, minimalism is clearly more than a fad-- it’s the future.

And if you, too, have begun to venture out into minimalist waters, then you know just how exhilarating even the most basic minimalist life-changes can be.

But if you’ve already cleaned out your medicine cabinet, sliced the contents of your closet in half, and kicked your stress shopping habit, you might be wondering: What’s next?

And while only you can decide where your minimalist journey will take you next, purchasing a tiny house could be a great option. Here’s why.

You’ll be forced to do away with excess

I know what you’re thinking: “I’ve already purged my entire home of the non-essentials” But, have you really? Maybe you’ve cleaned out your closet and done a bit of Marie Kondo style de-cluttering, but growing immune to excess is far easier than you might think.

Like do you actually need enough silverware for a family of 12? Or 27 mugs? Or a toaster oven and a toaster? These are the kinds of questions you'll be forced to ask yourself when downsizing to a 500 square foot tiny house.

You’ll be able to focus on what matters most

But minimalism is about so much more than just de-cluttering. As Joshua Becker of Becoming Minimalist puts it: “At its core, minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of everything that distracts us from it.”  And the truth is, the “thing” that we value most isn’t really a thing at all. Most of all, people value other people. We value our friends and family. And by breaking down the all-consuming burdens that often come with being a regular home-owner like mortgages, maintenance, sky-high utility bills, and excessive technology, we’re able to spend more time focused on the people we love most.

And live a more fulfilled life

If you’ve had the opportunity to travel, whether domestically or abroad, you know just how fulfilling it can be to see and experience more of the world. But what you might not have known is that science actually backs this feeling. It’s true-- studies have shown that traveling does, in fact, make you happier.

So what does all of this have to do with minimalism and buying a tiny house? Well, for starters, most tiny homes are equipped with wheels, which would make seeing the world much, much easier. You could spend a summer -- or even a year -- traveling across the U.S. Or, you could opt to travel to a new location every year. Regardless of how you decide to rove about, the point is this: In a tiny house, you would never feel tied down. And even if you wanted to venture over the pond, you could put all the money you’ll save from living a minimalist, tiny house lifestyle towards a plane ticket.
