Find a Strong Community After Moving to One of These Cities

A strong community has been cited as the first of six important attributes to look for when  considering moving to a new city. This, surely, comes as no surprise. Being social creatures, a sense of belonging is a human need, placed just above a need for safety and the physiological needs of food, water, warmth and rest in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

Knowing how important a strong community is psychologically, the question then begs to be asked: what cities have the strongest sense of community? While a sense of community is normally easily found in smaller towns, it can be difficult to find your niche in a bustling metropolitan.

A recent study looked at the top 50 metropolitan areas in the United States and evaluated their sense of community based on their number of community events, community centers and parks as well as their walkability, community happiness and crime rate. It was found that Los Angelos, California ranked the highest for the strongest sense of community overall. Interestingly, it was joined in the top ten by three other California cities (San Francisco, San Diego and San Jose). Other cities that made the top ten included New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Minneapolis, Denver and Austin.

If you are mostly interested in community events, New York may be the place for you. It should come as no surprise that the major metropolitan ranked the highest in community events. From Pride events to soirees to discos to high-profile speakers to carnivals, New York has such an abundance of events that anyone can find something that interests them.

If you love to have a community center in walking distance, point yourself to California. Los Angelos ranked the highest in community centers and California cities composed four of the top five cities in this category. The California city of San Diego also ranked highest in number of parks so if you love a stroll through the park or an outdoor run, it may be the city for you.

Moving away from the West Coast, the lowest crime rates were found in Louisville, Kentucky. If safety is a top priority for you, this may be a city to consider. Though, the highest community happiness in general was found a little further south in Raleigh, North Carolina. This could potentially be attributed to the arts, culture, business climate and diverse population found in the area that the mayor of Raleigh noted as lovable aspects of the city.
