About the designer

Eileen Gray is an Irish born architect and furniture designer who was brought up in London and was one of the first women to be admitted into the Slade. She first experimented with painting but later took on an apprenticeship at a lacquer shop. Her experience with lacquer had a huge impact on her designs in the future when she became an established pioneer in lacquered screens and cabinets. She worked quite closely with other icons of the modern movement such as Le Corbusier and J. J. P. Oud. Her work has major cultural and social impact in the design world, and today we’ll be looking at one of the most popular pieces; the Eileen Gray Daybed.

About the product

classicon

The Eileen Gray Daybed is an iconic piece of modern furniture that has become a classic over the decades. It was one of the very first pieces designed by Eileen Grey for the Paris apartment Madame Mathiue-Levy in 1920s. It was designed in a time where daybeds epitomized luxury in interior designs, but its artfully plain design captured the trending popularity of the modernism movement really well.

It features a very clean, crisp aesthetic that is both visually and functionally versatile. Moreover, it is also very flexible in usability – you can sit on it in any direction that you see fit. It can even be placed in the center of the room as an alternate coffee table, be the magnum opus of a public space such as a lobby or an executive office, or be emulated in a stylish study room. Stunningly proportioned and very simple, it’s the perfect addition to have in any contemporary home.

Counted as Eileen Gray’s finest creations, this daybed is as aesthetically appealing as it is comfortable to sit, lean, and relax on. Each side is a study in clean, minimalist aesthetics with a chrome accent twist. Moreover, its modern design befits contemporary sensibilities and its sleekness is perfect for the ‘less is more’ movement that seems to be taking the world by storm again. It is timeless and can be used as a classic showpiece in both medium sized and large homes.

About the materials

The Eileen Gray Daybed is a study in achromatic color scheme. It is made from the sturdiest materials and boasts an excellent quality. It consists of a tubular steel frame that is chrome-plated but can also be found in a powder-coated black finish. The main body has a beech wood frame with rubber webbing. It is covered by a loose mattress, which in turn is covered with a polyurethane polyester fiber. The whole thing is then upholstered with the final fabric – either leather or some other fabric. An interesting fact to note is that over the last 5 decades, the body-mass ratio of the Eileen Gray Daybed has increased an average of 10 cm so it’s now available in larger versions.

Points to ponder before purchase

The one thing that you must consider before purchasing the Eileen Gray Daybed is that it is approximately 190 cm in length. So, you should only lock it down as your final choice if you have enough space to accommodate it.

Matching the right interior design style

Here are a few interior design styles that the Eileen Gray Daybed would look superb in:

  • Minimalism: The clean aesthetic and simple styling of the Eileen Gray Daybed is a great fit for minimalist interior designs where unadorned beauty is the height of chic.
  • Modernism: Since this daybed was originally conceived in the modernist era, it would look incredible in a purist modern residential or commercial interior design.
  • Eclectic: The classic beauty of the Eileen Gray Daybed would look totally happening in a uniquely eclectic atmosphere and can even be used as a centerpiece.
  • Contemporary: The Eileen Gray Daybed would be the perfect shoe-in within a contemporary style ambiance where the mismatch of furniture, aesthetics, and popular trends will make it seem even more timeless than it is.

Everything you need to know about the Eileen Gray Daybed is right here. We hope now you know how it came to be so iconic and how its history has such an impact on its overall bearing and design.
