Construction Documentation is a common term used for part of the drawing that will be used in construction statistics. Construction Drawing’s main purpose is to serve the graphical representation of a structure that is to be constructed. Drawings play a vital role in the construction field as it showcases how the building interior and exterior structure will look like before actual construction. It is also known as Architectural Drawings that are a technical drawing that communicates visually on how something will function or get constructed of the building project.

Types of drawing for building design

There are 6 Key drawings for residential construction documents. Based on your projects, these drawings will be used for construction analysis. These are:-

Plans

Plans are illustrative drawings for any projects. All the construction projects would include a Site plan, Location plan, Roof plan, Floor plan, Landscape plan, and Reflected ceiling plans. It depicts the diagram drawn to measure arrangements and structure of a building.

Site Plan: -

These are the large-scale drawings which show the entire development of the site that is essential for planning applications. A site plan is concluded from the site investigations. The information of the site plan depends upon the size and nature of the project. These drawings showcase the location, orientation, and information about the site’s topography and site work which includes measurement of space. It can be created as 2D or 3D site plan.

Floor Plan: -

Floor plans are crucial for interior design or architecture project. These drawings are attained from a horizontal view above the building from where the layout of the rooms inside can be inspected. It is prepared for the designing process, or for giving instructions at the time of construction which is associated with other drawings, schedules, and specifications of floor plans. There are different kinds of floor plans out of which one is a 2D version that shows the measurements of space. 2D version of furniture plan derives floor plan with furniture arrangements and structures drawn. Furniture plan shows the space of objects kept on the floor. Demolition plan is a type of floor plan that covers the only exterior view of walls and doors.

Roof Plan: -

Roof Plan is a key element of the planning stage for roof construction and renovation of the existing roof structure of the building. It describes the slopes and usually framing of the roof from a top-down point. It is a scaled drawing of roof structure that contains dimensions like size, shape, design, and placement of all materials.

Landscape Plan: -

The landscape plan will show the exterior and interior design of a building. It includes from a backyard to neighborhood design of the building in detail to visualize how the building will look like with the arrangements and structures that you want it to look beautiful.

  1. Reflected Ceiling Plan: -

  2. It depicts the change in ceiling level, installation of molding structures and attachment of light fixtures. It can be a detailed plan of what material and specifications will be used and in what arrangement will it be placed.
  3. Location Plan: -

  4. Location plan forms a part of a planning application that is a supportive document that provides an illustration of the building in view with the surroundings. It provides more detail of the development within site boundaries.

Interior & Exterior Elevations

Elevations are graphical projections in the 2D version of the interior and exterior faces of a building which includes drawing of all the components that can be viewed from one side of the building. It also reviews the 2D drawing of the building’s facades. Exterior Elevation is one side of the building from outside that shows the shape of the house indicating floor heights, overall building height, walls, doors, and windows. Various materials and products are used on the outside. It can be 2D or 3D drawings where the 2D drawings show the measurement and relationship of exterior elements such as door and lights. Interior Elevations it compromises of details of a room from inside and of walls. They indicate the overall height of the room, wall, doors, windows, finish, wardrobe and cabinetry.

  1. Building & Wall Sections

Building section drawings cut vertically through the house and show different sections of the room cut through. The main purpose of the section drawings is to show the building structure, vertical dimensions, and materials of foundation from the rooftop. It represents the material of construction to be used, heights and measurements of different components of the building. It also shows the vertical plane cut through an object and are considered as a connection between different levels of a building.

  1. Interior & Exterior Detailing

It occurs when we start to zoom into specific areas of the house and indicate the materials of the detail and other accurate information need to construct it. Details are created from a horizontal cut, vertical cut, or elevation of a particular area of the house.

  1. Room finishes & Schedules

A schedule is used to indicate different information about a product or a material in one place. With this, one can see a total number of doors what kind of doors they are, where they will be placed, its material specifications and hardware information. It can include a multitude of items.

  1. Framing & Utility plans

Framing plans are structural drawings for residential projects. It contains information that can be accessed by the builder to view the size of the material and weight acting on the frames. The weight on the frame is considered as “load” which is of two types such as a dead load that includes the materials used in building and live load is the furniture and occupants load. Utility plans are made to show the location of plumbing and electrical requirements of the project.
