5 Tips for Handling Stress As a Real Estate Agent

Written by Posted On Saturday, 11 May 2019 13:24

When exploring real estate as a career, you’ll often center on things like the high profit potential, flexible hours, low barrier of entry, and enjoyment of working with clients. These are some of the reasons that people absolutely love working in this field.

What you don’t think about is the kind of stress you’ll likely face in your job. It’s not the most stressful career in the world, but it does have its low points. For example, you don’t get a paycheck until you sell a house. That means even if you had an accepted offer on a house on your first day of work, you wouldn’t receive any compensation until about 30 days after the fact.

Additionally, it can be stressful to set your own hours and work around your everyday life. If you have a family, you probably try to meet as many obligations and responsibilities at home as possible, not always realizing that it’s taking away from your success at work.

If you’ve entered the real estate market and are regularly experiencing high pressure, it’s time to take a step back and start taking control. Here are five things you can do to minimize stress and maximize your productivity.

1. Buy Stress-Relieving Products

There are many commercial products and consumable substances designed for stress relief. Investing in a few products can be a quick way to lower tension and get back to work. Here are some suggestions:

CBD Products: Cannabidiol (CBD) is a substance derived from the hemp plant that won’t get you high or produce negative side effects, but it will help you relax. You can order CBD gummies from a legal distributor to eat whenever you feel overwhelmed.

Back Massager: Buy a shiatsu massage cushion that attaches to your seat. It uses heat, vibration, and rolling steel nodes to work out tight muscles caused by stress. It’s amazing what a good massage can do for restoring your sanity.

  • Relaxation Apps: Many of these are free, although there are a few paid subscriptions for apps that can help you relax with little effort. Some offer breathing exercises or words of affirmation while others offer courses and psychological evaluations to help you take control.

Aromatherapy Diffuser: Some essential oils, such as lavender, have a calming effect when the scent is inhaled. The effect has been compared to anti-anxiety medication but without the bill or side effects.

Weighted Blanket: If your stress levels are challenging your ability to fall and stay asleep each night, consider a weighted blanket. It creates a sense of security for the wearer that promotes better sleep and reduces emotional challenges like anxiety the next day.

Some of these products will work better for handling stress than others depending on your preferences and your needs, but they’re worth trying! Many have found success in relieving strain with similar products.

2. Perform Stress-Relieving Practices

Oftentimes stress relief is as simple as adding a few healthy practices to your daily routine. Some practices may actually rewire your brain to handle difficulties with grace and enjoy a better outlook on life as a result. Here are a few practices you can try:

  • Meditate: Many successful realtors and others in stressful jobs use meditation to help them focus and relax. Take 10 minutes per day to tune out the world, particularly the tech portion of it, and let your tenseness melt away.

  • Yoga: This fitness routine combines physical stretches and mental meditation to relieve tension throughout the body and restore peace. Just 15 minutes of yoga per day can improve your outlook for hours.

Count Down and Breathe: This old-fashioned technique for calming yourself is timeless and effective. While your brain is firing off cortisol, your deep breaths and counting will slow its transmission and help you relax before it becomes unbearable.

Pay Attention to Yourself: It seems strange, but tuning into what you’re focusing on can really help. You may be able to stop yourself from reliving the past or worrying about a future experience simply by recognizing that you’re doing so.

Most stressed-out realtors use a combination of each of these tactics to control their emotions so they can focus and be more productive throughout the day.

3. Eat Right

Those who are stressed tend to overlook essential self-care. What you eat and how you take care of your body can lead to direct relief.

Start with a healthier diet. If you skip breakfast or pack highly-processed snacks or meals throughout the day, you’re definitely not going to help your pressured state. Your body handles stress better when it’s well-fed with proper nutrients.

There are also certain foods that are known to relieve stress. They include:

Dark chocolate

  • Milk

  • Cashews

  • Avocado

  • Blueberries

  • Green leafy vegetables

  • Lean proteins like chicken

  • Oatmeal

  • Yogurt

  • Salmon

  • Pistachios

Many of these foods contain caffeine and antioxidants, which can regulate your mental system and boost productivity, bypassing stress altogether. You’ll also notice that each of these foods is healthy for you, packed with vitamins and nutrients that will keep your body in optimal condition.

4. Exercise Regularly

There are people who love exercise, those who hate it, and those who feel like they never have time for it. If you’re not in the first category, you’ll have a hard time making exercise a priority, and that may be a reason you’re feeling stressed lately.

Exercise has incomparable abilities to minimize the impact of stress on the body. It regulates cortisol and lets you blow off steam after a hard day. Your body experiences an incredible release of endorphins that melt physical tension.

Working out in the morning may give you a jumpstart on preventing stress that day, but you might enjoy the benefits of doing it at the end of the day. Before heading home to your family, you might go for a 30-minute run or ride your bike home from work to let down the tension and brighten your mood.

5. Turn Off Notifications on Your Phone

It might bother you out to think about turning off notifications on your phone, especially if low clientele is a top stress factor. You want to be available whenever a potential client calls or emails, and you might feel like you’re missing something if you turn them off.

However, removing notifications lets you live more in the moment. You’ll still check your emails and texts regularly throughout the day and evening, but a ding won’t interrupt your time with family or your activities that you usually do to decompress at night.

Your body craves time away from work, but notifications make it impossible to achieve that. Studies have even shown that turning off your phone can relieve stress, so it’s worth a try!

Pressure does not have to be an ever-present factor in your role as a real estate agent. Thousands of agents before you have applied similar stress-relieving tactics so they can better enjoy their careers and their profits now and in the future.
