By now you probably know I have a soft spot for tiling and I have been referencing the trade quite a bit on previous posts. In the post on the "Essential tilers tool kit" post I was asked a question when I shared it with my network "Any advice on an electric tile cutter?" I have bought 2 tile cutters over the years and in this post I am going to talk about what to look for in an electric tile cutter.

I last bought an electric tile cutter from ProTiling Supplies after I got sound advice from them.

Electric or manual tile cutter?

There are options to buy either an electric tile cutter or a manual tile cutter. My advice is to get a manual cutter if you only have a small job to do. Electric cutters certainly give you the best results, a neater finish, more precise and less risk of actually breaking tiles.

Power output:

To me power and RPM is the main factor in getting great results. With low power output and low rpm you risk shattering the tile that you are cutting.

100+ Volts would be the power output that I would look at if I was to buy a new cutter.

What specifications should I look for?

As mentioned above, power is very important. If you are a professional tiler, you will have to look for the following specifications to ensure that you have a cutter that can handle most tiling situations.

1) Cutting Depth - Very important for determining the size of the tile you can cut.

2) Bore - The bore size is essential for finish quality

3) Blade Diameter - The blade diameter is important again for determining the tile size you can cut.

What are the best tile cutter brands?

I have used the following cutting brands:

  • Montolit
  • Raimondi
  • Battipav

Montolit offer power and precision which makes those cutters my favourite. Raimondi cutters are known for their reliability. Battipav would be more expensive but they deliver excellent results for tilers.

If you are considering buying an electric tile cutter, following the tips above will help you make a wise purchase for your business.
