Your washing machine is a major investment, so keeping it well maintained will ensure it works optimally and lasts for years to come. If you’re getting less than clean clothes or noticing strange odors from your unit, it’s time for a maintenance check. However, you don’t have to wait for your unit to malfunction to give it a little TLC. Here are a few washing machine maintenance tips to bear in mind.

Washing Machine Maintenance Tips - Ways to Prevent Extensive Damages

Do you know how often you need to inspect your washing machine? Do you know what to look for as you inspect it? While you may be good at emptying the lint from the dryer, here are some of the things to look for, as well as methods you can use to help your washer perform as well as possible.

Inspect the Hoses

Every month or so, inspect the hoses behind your unit for cracks, bulges or fraying as well as leaks around the edges. Make sure the fittings are tight and replace the hose if you find a problem. It’s also advisable to replace hoses every three to five years as part of a preventive maintenance plan. Be sure to maintain about four inches between your washer and the wall to prevent the hoses from kinking.

Don’t Overload the Machine

Oversize loads can strain your washer, so break up your laundry into smaller loads. It’s also important to use the appropriate amount of water for the size of the load. Bulky or heavy items should also be washed in smaller loads as they are harder on your appliance.

Use the Right Type of Detergent

Check the manufacturer’s directions to ensure you’re using the correct type and amount of detergent for your washer. Many modern washers require special, low-sudsing detergents. And using too much soap can cause excess wear and tear on your washer and leave residue on your clothes.

Clean the Interior and Dispensers

Be sure to clean your washer so it’s spotless and smelling fresh. Simply run an empty load of hot water with two cups of white vinegar every month or so. Add about half a cup of detergent in the middle of the wash cycle and let the full cycle complete. This will clean your appliance and absorb any musty odors.

Clean the Lint Filter

Depending on your washer, the lint collector may be located near the top of the washtub, or in the agitator tube (center column of most machines). Keeping the lint filter clean will help your washer run more efficiently.

Keep the Machine Level

A washing machine that’s not level can rock, vibrate or move across the floor during the spin cycle, potentially damaging the machine and/or the floor.

Leave the Door Open After a Load

You can prevent musty odors and mildew by leaving the washer door or lid open after a load. The idea is to give the machine ample time to dry out and keep it smelling fresh. If you have a front-loading washer, wipe down the rubber seal around the door after doing laundry.

Bottom Line

These washing machine maintenance tips can help you to prevent some of the most common problems such as draining issues. Invest in maintenance and your machine will run smoothly all year round.
