Different Types of Shutters - Which One is Best For Your Home?

There are many benefits of window blinds and shutters. What are the different types of shutters? To be able to answer this well, we must first understand what window shutters are.

What Are Window Shutters?

Window shutters have been used to protect and decorate homes for ages now. These sturdy frames, which are usually arranged into horizontal rails and vertical stiles, have now become more relevant than ever as they provide powerful protection against sun, enhance security and privacy, and accentuate the overall aesthetic appeal of a building while also protecting it from weather-related atrocities.

Window shutters are categorized on the basis of various parameters, including panel style, size, shape, material, etc. This article aims to shed some light on different types of window shutters.

Types of Shutters Based on Area of Placement

Depending on their area of placement, window shutters are broadly categorized into two subtypes: Interior shutters and Exterior shutters. Interior shutters consist of narrow units arranged in an accordion pattern. These shutters provide flexibility in terms of coverage provided and can be easily adjusted to suit one's privacy requirements. Exterior shutters, on the other hand, were designed to elevate security. However, these days, these shutters are used more for decorative purposes.

Types of Shutters Based on Panel Style

Based on panel style, the different types of shutters are vinyl,  louvered, raised-panel, shaker, plantation, board and batten, Scandinavian, and half-solid/half louvered. Louvered shutters can be used both internally as well as externally and give a home a country-like feel. Plantation shutters can be adjusted to allow light to pass through them. Scandinavian shutters seal the entire window space and are effective in protecting homes against damage by external weather conditions.

Types of Shutters Based on Size

Based on size and coverage provided, the different types of shutters are cafe style, full height and tier-on-tier. Drawing inspiration from European architecture, cafe style shutters utilize a plantation set-up at the bottom and a contrasting but beautiful design on top. These are typically used in outdoor areas. Full height shutters provide complete coverage. The louvered style is the most preferred style in full-height shutters. Tier-on-tier shutters allow homeowners to operate the lower tier independent of the upper tier, giving them flexibility in terms of which part of the panel they wish to keep open and which part closed.

Types of Shutters Based on Shape

On the basis of shape, the different types of window shutters are arch-shaped shutters, rectangular, circular, trapezoid-shaped shutters, French door cut shutters, and special-shape shutters.

Categorization Based on Panel Folds

On the basis of panel folds, window shutters are categorized into no-fold, bi-fold, and tri-fold shutters. The term fold refers to the count of shutter panels on each side of a window. Window shutters with no folds and a single panel are referred to as no-fold shutters. These are ideal for small windows or windows that have an awkward shape. Shutters with two folds are called bi-folds and shutters with three panels are called tri-fold shutters. Bi-fold and tri-fold shutters are ideal for medium-sized windows.

Categorization Based on Shutter Material

Window shutters can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, engineered wood, metal, laminate, metal, PVC, and foam synthetic. Wood is the ideal choice for all kinds of shutters as it can be molded into any shape and wood shutters are durable too. Laminate shutters are perfect to be used in places that experience heavy rains. PVC shutters work well in places with heavy sunshine. Foam synthetic shutters provide an extra layer of powerful protection against heat, wind, etc.

We hope this comprehensive guide on different types of shutters will help you make an informed decision about which pick will be the best for you.
