Regular carpet stains from liquid or food seem like the worst to remove until you’ve come across something much harder to extract. Sticky substances like gum, candy and any type of slime toy that kids love to throw around can be an exasperating inconvenience to come across. If you are cleaning your carpet and find something stuck that needs special attention, know how to remove sticky residue from carpet with these tips.

How to Remove Sticky Residue from Carpet - Tips from the Pros

Don’t know how to remove sticky residue from carpet? Some methods include to ice it off, use oil, or use your hair dryer to dry it up and then proceed to remove the stain.

Ice It Off

The most favorable way that homeowners have removed gum or anything sticky from their carpet flooring in high traffic areas is icing it off. All you need is ice or ice pack, a butter knife or spoon, wash cloth and warm water mixed with liquid laundry detergent.

1. Place an ice pack or ice directly onto the affected area and let it rest there until the sticky substance has hardened.

2. Once the gum has become hard, use a butter knife to gently pull it away from the carpet fibers. It is perfectly fine if the substance shatters and breaks into pieces, because you can later vacuum those pieces up.

3. When all the sticky stuff has been removed, take the cleaning mixture and dip the washcloth in it. Use that washcloth to blot out any remaining residue that could possibly leave a stain.

Oil

An alternative option that is pretty popular in the event that ice doesn’t seem to do the job is using oil. Oils that have been tested and recommended for use on gummy stains are olive oil, eucalyptus oil and peanut butter. Be sure to test another area of carpet to be sure that the oils don’t stain or cause discoloration. When finished using an oil solution to extract the chunk, cleaning is necessary.

1. Add oil to wash cloth and rub onto the affected area and be sure that the wad becomes saturated with the oil.

2. After softening the material, use a butter knife to scrape it off of the carpet. Re-apply the oil under as you pull some away to ease it off of the fibers better.

3. When it is fully removed, clean the remaining stain with warm water and liquid laundry detergent and a new clean washcloth, then wait for the carpet and padding to dry.

Buy a Special Cleaner

When all else fails, there is always a solution that can be purchased from your local supermarket or corner store to remove the stain and protect your carpet in the future. With any cleaning chemical, test it on a small area in case of discoloration. Follow the instructions on the bottle and make sure you are wearing gloves.

Hair Dryer

This solution is best for gum that has recently been dropped or pressed into the carpet.

1. Take a blow dryer and out it on med heat directly on the gum.

2. Keep an eye out for the carpet to make sure it isn’t getting burnt.

3. When the gum is starting to melt, get a plastic bag and let the gum attach itself to the bag as you pull it from the carpet fibers.

4. Remove as much gum as possible then start removing the stain that remains behind.

Bottom Line

When situations get sticky, it’s nice to know how to remove sticky residue from carpet. There are many options to try before getting frustrated and cutting the leftovers out of the carpet. Once you’ve completed this process, be sure to freshen and revive your carpet fibers to make them look brand new.
