Infant Safety Tips for Apartment Living

When you live in an apartment with an infant, the safety hazards will be different than living in a house. You will need to worry about the height of your apartment, how to get out of the building quickly if an emergency arises and the like.

Below, we share some infant safety tips for living in an apartment.

Latch the Balcony Doors

Keep the balcony locked securely at all times. You do not want your baby exploring this area unsupervised. Always check that the sliding doors onto the balcony are latched, and if applicable, you can always install an extra latch for more security.

You can also block the balcony door with a couch or other piece of furnishing while the area is unused to minimize the chances of your infant stumbling out onto the balcony.

Safeguard Baby’s Sleeping Area

A baby capsule is a great way of transporting baby in and out of your apartment, especially if they have fallen asleep while you have been out and about. It takes up little room compared to a pram or stroller and baby can carry on sleeping without being manoeuvred to much.

Keep pets away from your sleeping baby. Also, ensure where the baby is sleeping is not dusty, has plenty of ventilation and is a clean space.

Install Pressure-Mounted Baby Gates

Rather than installing permanent gates that require nails and drills, install pressure mounted baby gates at the entrance to the kitchen, bathroom or anywhere that you do not want your infant venturing into.

If you have a room or an area where your infant is usually left free to explore, be sure to have one baby gate at the entrance to this area, so they are kept in this space.

Install Wall Shelves

Apartments usually have a smaller space and less surface area available for storing things, which means that you might have items kept on counters, tables, and more.

With an infant in the house, it is time to keep your medical items, chemicals and other baby hazards away from these reachable surfaces. Stow these items away on wall shelves so that infants cannot reach them.

Check for Odours

When you live in an apartment, you might have tenants next door who smoke. Alternatively, you might have moved into a unit for which its previous tenant was a heavy smoker.

Try to opt for smoke-free apartment floors or units where possible. Substances from cigarette smoke tend to stick to the walls and floor surfaces and can be a serious health hazard for infants.

There are ways of removing odours and making the apartment well ventilated. Do your homework to know how to do this safely and with minimal disturbance to the household.

Secure the Front Door

The last thing you want is for your infant to venture out the front door into the hallway! Ensure that your front door is always properly latched and double-locked.

Check with the landlord if you can install an extra chain or lock for your front door in advance. Always place these new locks and chains higher from the existing ones and at an adult eye-level.

When you have a baby there are always additional hazards to be aware of. A lot is common sense and you learn as you go. However, for those of you who live in an apartment here are a few pointers for keeping baby safe.
