Key Habits of Successful Home Sellers

Are you considering selling a home in the coming months? Every home seller wants to close the deal as expediently as possible, with minimal hassle, and for the full asking price. Easier said than done, right? Of course, it doesn’t always happen that way, but there are some steps to take – even in the consideration stage – to ensure a smooth home selling process and a satisfactory result when the time comes. Developing the following habits can certainly help.

1. Tidy and declutter your home on a regular basis.

When a house is on the market, it needs to be show-ready at all times as oftentimes there’s not much notice for when people want to take a look in person. That said, keep in mind that a strong first impression is vital. This doesn’t require a full deep home cleaning every day, but do make sure to eliminate clutter and to pay attention to the tiny, yet obvious things such as wiping down the counters, washing and putting away dirty dishes, and making the beds.

2. Get rid of excess belongings.

Everyone wants a big, beautiful home. The more often home owners purge unnecessary belongings – especially when their homes are on the market – the more spacious the home is ultimately going to look. Get into a habit of regularly going through drawers and closets and removing erroneous and unnecessary or unused items.

3. Maintain curb appeal.

Again, first impressions are everything—and that encompasses not just the inside of a house, but also the exterior. That doesn’t mean the lawn needs to be mowed on a daily basis, but doing so at least once a week will give a home a polished overall look that attracts potential buyers. Cleaning up any debris; getting rid of dead or overgrown plants; and wiping front doors and windows clean are other ways to ensure a clean exterior that doesn’t detract viewers before they even get inside the house.

4. Do the research.

Selling a home is a hefty challenge and process. It’s impossible to embark on it without doing the research and being informed not only of personal preferences, but of market characteristics and options available to assist in selling a home. It can be hard to know where to start, but there are plenty of resources. Ask family and friends for advice, but also turn to online research. There are plenty of resources to assist in preparing home owners to sell. SOLD.com is one of them – we offer a short quiz that identifies sellers’ objectives, characteristics of their markets and homes and then provide a free and unbiased recommendation for the best route to take and resources to use. Tapping into all resources available to identify the best option for a given situation will be well worth it to maximize value and minimize time.

5. Build buzz.

A degree in marketing is not necessary to generate good word-of-mouth for a home. This doesn’t have to be a daily activity, but about once a week, share the listing on your social media profiles, simply reminding folks that it’s there. The likelihood that someone in your network could bite at that listing is higher than you might expect.

6. Respond to offers.

Finally, make sure to respond to any and all offers, even if it’s simply to say, “no thank you.” Successful sellers don’t let offers pile up; instead, they are quick to let buyers know where they stand.

These habits are all vital for selling a home quickly and for top value. They’re also not bad habits to incorporate into everyday life – even if you’re not getting ready to sell a home. You never know when the urge for a fresh start might strike.
