How to Deal With Common Garage Door Problems

It’s but normal for a garage door to experience problems at some point, so don’t worry if it suddenly acts up.

In some cases, you can go the DIY route when fixing garage door issues, but some problems require the expertise of a garage door repair service.

Let’s look at some of the most common garage door problems, and see if you can fix them yourself or if they’re best left to professionals.

The door isn’t reacting to the remote.
There are several reasons why the remote you use to open or close your garage door isn’t working.

The most common reason is dead batteries. Try to get fresh ones and see if it works. If it doesn’t, then perhaps it’s the distance between the door and the spot from where you’re clicking the remote. So check if you’re within the recommended range.

There’s also the possibility that the remote is already broken, or that the antenna on the opener is already damaged, so check on that as well. You should also see if there is something wrong with the door opener unit, or if the whole thing is a power source issue, like an unplugged power cord or a circuit breaker that tripped.

The door won’t close or open fully.
Most modern garage doors have sensors or electronic eyes that emit a beam of light on both sides, right next to the tracks.

If the garage door does not open or close all the way, it could be a problem with the alignment of these sensors, whose lenses are supposed to face each other at all times.

When these “eyes” are misaligned, they tend to stop either the opening or the closing process. The same thing happens when something stands in the way of the beam of light, or if the lenses are dirty. So make sure the line of sight of the light beams is unobstructed at all times.

Slow opening or closing
Sometimes, our garage door could take forever to open or close. Try the speed setting first, because it could be set to the lowest speed. If there’s nothing wrong with the speed setting, then it’s likely that the rollers need more lubrication. Dirty tracks could also be causing the lag, so if this is the case, then clean them up.

The door is making a racket.
You know there’s a problem with your garage door when opening or closing it produces noises it’s not supposed to make.

If you’re hearing a lot of rattling as it closes or opens, then you should check for loose screws and bolts, which could be causing all that noise. Find those screws and tighten them using a wrench to stop the rattling.

If it’s grinding or squeaking, the rollers may need additional lubrication. Just make sure you use lithium- or silicone-based grease for the job.

But if you hear a popping sound, it likely has something to do with the torsion spring, and it’s a job that you should refer to professionals.

Cracks or gaps in the garage door
Over time, a garage door will likely crack, especially if it’s a wooden one. Those cracks can be fixed using sealant or a waterproof filler.

Rust
The metal parts of your garage door can be vulnerable to rust. You can deal with rust by rubbing the rusty area with a vinegar-soaked cloth. Once the vinegar dissolves the rust, sand the affected surfaces.

When your garage door problem is something as simple as a malfunctioning remote or rollers in need of lubrication, going DIY on it is okay. More complicated issues, however, should be referred to garage door repair specialists immediately.
