5 Reasons a Dream Home Is Suspiciously Discounted

Finding a dream home can be a very long and laborious process. You may have looked for months and months on end. Finally, after so much searching, you have located a home that’s just perfect. It’s the right size, it has all the features you want and it’s a bargain on top of that.

However, maybe it is so much of a bargain that your suspicions have been raised. In certain cases, you are right to be suspicious. That discounted price may be hiding something you absolutely need to know about.

Environmental Contamination

For one, it could be dangerous to even live in that home. In certain cases, there has been environmental contamination in a house or even the entire neighborhood. This can include dangerous radon gas created by the breakdown of rocks, soil and even water. If there is a contaminant like radon in a home you want to buy, you’ll need to implement real estate remedial services.

Structural and System Damage

There may also be significant damage to a home’s structure or systems that won’t be advertised in a listing. For example, there may be damage to the foundation. The electrical system may also not operate correctly. Such problems should be reported to you by the seller. However, you should always double check by paying for a thorough home inspection before you commit to buy.

Crime Rate

A home may seem absolutely perfect. It may even pass a home inspection with flying colors. However, there may be issues you may have not considered. For one, the crime rate in that neighborhood may be high. This crime could pose a threat to you and your family. It may even have negative effects on the school system and cause surrounding business to flee. Always check the crime rate when home-shopping.

Rural Location

In other cases, a home may be cheaper because it’s in a rural location far away from the city and its modern comforts. This may be good for certain families, but living in rural area may not be for everyone. Consider how much you’ll have to commute to get to work, go shopping and do other things you take for granted.

Hauntings and Murders

A home that is being sold at a bargain price more than likely comes with baggage that made it hard to sell at higher prices. Sometimes, this goes back to the reputation of the house. A murder may have occurred there. Alternatively, a house may be reputed to be haunted. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, purportedly haunted properties are something real estate agents deal with.

Overall, extensive research and investigation should always be part of the home-buying process. If a home seems cheaper than it should be, make sure to determine why it is being offered at that lower price point. The problems that could have lead to that lower price may cause more trouble than what they’re worth dealing with in exchange for those savings.
