How to prepare your home for the arrival of a new baby

Congratulations on the coming of your new baby. As you get closer to your due, one of the things that will be top on your mind is how to prepare your house for the arrival of your new baby. Despite what you may have heard, babies don’t restrict themselves to that one thoughtfully decorated room in your house (the nursery), rather, they tend to take over the entire home. In fact, most babies don’t get to use their nursery until they are a few months old, which is why when it comes to preparing for a new baby, every corner of the house is important.

Here, we have put together a few suggestions for preparing your home when expecting.

Make your home safe

In your mind, there is enough time before your baby starts crawling all over the house, exploring strange places, and getting into trouble. But the truth is, the time for this is not as far away as you think. Any parent will tell you that babies tend to become quite mobile overnight so that before you know it, they are moving from one end of the house to another.

It is, therefore, a good idea to prepare for this mobility ahead of time by giving your home a safety audit and putting the necessary safety precautions in place.

Harmful objects and chemicals should be kept out of sight, while staircases and balconies should be properly secured. You should consider buying a baby gate now so that you can quickly secure dangerous areas the moment your baby starts moving.

Set up the baby area

Apart from the thoughtfully designed nursery which your baby will likely not use until when they are a few months old, it is advisable you set up a baby area in another section of the house, preferably where you will be spending most of your time.

For example, if you will be spending a lot of your day time in the sitting room receiving visitors and attending to other routine stuff, you should set up a baby area somewhere in the sitting room where you can keep an eye on things.

The idea is to set up a play and sleep area, which can easily be made up of a Pack n Play. Most Park n Plays come with a bassinet, changing table, portable crib, and toys set. You can easily find the perfect Park n Play set when you check out the annual reviews of baby products by Mommyhood101.

This place will become a place for baby to nap, a place to change diapers, and where you can keep some of the essentials your baby needs.

De-clutter

Chances are your home is currently in a state of cluttered chaos, where everything is everywhere just as you like it (or not). This can be okay when it’s just you and your spouse, but the arrival of a new baby turns everything upside down.

It is important that you find a home for all the odds and ends cluttering your home before the arrival of your baby so that you don’t run out of your mind trying to find a baby item amidst all the clutter. In fact, you should probably designate space for each and every item in your house so that not only is everything well organised, you will be able to create space for storing your baby items.

You will be shocked how a crib, bassinet, baby chair, and other baby things take up a lot of space in your already cluttered house.

Do the baby shopping

Getting ready for your new baby also means having everything ready in the house for the coming of your little one. This means clothes, diapers, toys, sterilizing sets, and so on. You don’t want to be running to the mall every few days to get the things you need.

Therefore, now that you have time on your hands, make a list of the essential things you need. You don’t have to make up the entire list in one day as you may mistakenly leave out important items. You should also talk to other parents, visit parenting blogs, and generally seek expert advice on the things you should have in the house pending the arrival of your baby.

Prepare for visitors

The arrival of a new baby is cause for joy in every culture, so you should expect to receive a lot of guests, some of which will want to stay the night. In fact, a few family members and friend, such as your mom and best friend, may even want to stay for longer to help with chores around the house so that you don’t get overwhelmed taking care of the new baby.

It is therefore worth taking the time now to prep for the arrival of these visitors as you may not be able to do so later. To this end, get all the necessary sheets and towels in place, air the spare bedroom (if you have one), and stock up on toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and toilet paper.
