Imagine this: You are expecting guests, but the guests are not just anybody. They are your soon-to-be parents-in-law, and you want to make a good first impression on them. Unfortunately your home is riddled with things, and it looks disorganized and uninviting.

Luckily there are several easy solutions to your problems, and most of them are quite easy to carry out. In this guide you will get 3 simple steps to a more appealing home, so read on and get going.

1. Brighten up your home

This might require a bit of preparation, but it depends how far you want to take it. A bright home is per definition more welcoming than a cluttered home with lots of dark furniture, so you really want to consider this idea:

Bring in more bright colors, especially curtains, table cloths and blankets should be of bright colors (or just plain white). Not only do they make your home look cleaner and more inviting, they will also make your rooms appear bigger than they actually are. It would give a sense of spaciousness, because bright colors do not feel as claustrophobic as dark colors.

2. Clear out the clutter

For some people this may sound surprising, but for most people this is an obvious solution: Take out the trash. Literally. Things you are no longer using should either be sold, thrown out or stored in a basement or closet. There is absolutely no need to have things laying around that you are not actively using on a daily basis, so make sure you follow this routine regularly:

  1. Create 3 areas on a table or on the floor: “Keep”, “Sell”, “Trash”.
  2. Put all things you are not using regularly in a large pile, and start sorting into the 3 aforementioned areas.
  3. All the things you want to keep, should be put back.
  4. All the things you want to sell, should be put up for sale immediately.
  5. All the things you want to throw in the trash, should be thrown out immediately.

If you follow this routine at least once a month, you will keep your home organized and free of anything unnecessary.

3. Move things away from the floor

There are plenty of reasons why you should never keep anything directly on the floor. The most important reason is that you cannot vacuum underneath (or around) those things standing/sitting against your walls, and eventually a layer of dust and dirt will build up. This especially applies to any entryways going in and out of your home, because that is where shoes are brought inside from all kinds of weather.

You want all areas of your house to be as clean as possible, and to make it easier for yourself to maintain this, everything should be kept in storage spaces raised above floor level. The entryway could be organized with something as simple as a bench with shoe storage, which you can find on ConsumerJar, and besiedes that you could consider furniture on wheels too.
