Tips on How To Entertain Guests Outdoors This Winter

So it’s already cold outside, and much as you enjoy entertaining guests outdoors, you think it will have to wait until spring.

However, just because the weather’s icy and cold doesn’t mean your otherwise lovely patio or deck won’t be of any use during the winter. You can still have a fun outdoor winter party if you want to as long as you’ve got everything covered. From appropriate drinks to comfortable heating systems, here are some ideas that will allow you to entertain guests outdoors, even in the middle of winter.

Ask guests to dress for the weather.

If you’re holding a party at your home and you decided to have it on your patio or backyard, the least you can do is give the people you’ve invited a heads up. Ask them to dress warm, beanies, scarves, gloves and all.

Serve hot drinks.

Nothing makes people instantly warm in the cold weather than a steaming mug of cocoa. And if you’re having a party during the holidays, eggnog would be most appropriate. Come to think of it, even a cup of warm lemonade is going to feel good as it goes down.

Heat up the place.

Warm drinks are delicious, and they do help warm us up, but they’re not nearly as effective at keeping people warm as an actual source of heat. Fortunately, the host of an outdoor winter party has several options when it comes to keeping guests comfortably warm.

Gather lots of firewood and start a bonfire if you have a big enough backyard. Aside from heating the place, the open flame of a bonfire allows you to roast marshmallows or even hotdogs. Of course, before starting a bonfire, you have to make sure that it’s in keeping with local regulations or homeowners association rules.

If your landscaping has already incorporated a fire pit into its design, then you already have an excellent way of keeping your guests warm. Have the activities of your gathering centered around the fire pit, so everyone can enjoy the heat that its flames give off.

An outdoor fireplace would also be great, but if you don’t have one or the budget to have one built, then you can go for a chiminea, a portable fireplace that is perfect for patio areas.

But if you don’t want any open flames near your guests, especially when there are kids around, then the best heating option for your outdoor winter party would be patio heaters. You can choose between gas patio heaters, which produce a clean flame, and electric patio heaters, which give off a gentle radiant heat that keeps everyone warm in the safest possible way.

Let there be light.

Bonfires and fire pits may have open flames that give off light, but they’re not enough to illuminate your entire backyard. To keep your party going even when the sun has set, you need to put up overhead lighting. You can put up string fairy lights up in the trees or even among nearby bushes. Lanterns also make for an excellent lighting option, especially when it’s the holiday season.

Cover the space.

Considering that a lot of wet and cold things fall from the sky during the winter, it only makes perfect sense for you to do what you can to cover the outdoor space where you’re holding your party or gathering. A big enough tent or pavilion should be enough to cover your backyard and keep everyone protected from the elements of winter.

All it takes to entertain guests outdoors this winter is a little preparedness on your part. Follow the tips above and have fun outdoors with your guests even when the temperature drops.
