5 Tips for Picking a Dining Room Table 5 Tips for Picking a Dining Room Table

Whether you are considering purchasing your first dining table or you just want to restore the condition of your old table, the marketplace can be overwhelming. A single search on one marketplace website for keyword “dining room and kitchen tables” comes up with over 2000 search results. And that’s just one site!

To help you narrow it down, I’ve refined the 5 key tips for selecting a good dining table. So without further ado let’s start.

1. It is Good to Go bigger beyond your needs.

The toughest thing I have to do as a designer is to persuade customers that their furniture needs to be just a little bit larger than they think it is! I often hear things like, “We don’t actually sit at the dining table too much” or “we are only three people” or “rarely people visit us” Well, there may be only three of you, but if you have a dining room that is suited for a table for six then that room is going to look unhappy and empty — regardless of how many decorative stuffs you add into the room.

2. Leave three feet of clearance space.

If you go too far the other way, packing in a table that’s too vast for space, it will look overwhelming and messy. A good idea is to leave about 3 feet of space open behind your chairs in order to leave room for you and your guests to get up and down from the table and to sit and eat comfortably.

3. Select a round dining table set if you have a short area.

Round tables are a very good compact use of space. They typically tend to have smaller footprints than rectangular or square, so you can usually fit them into an area that isn’t ideal for a diverse type of table. They’re also very good for in-kitchen dining spaces, breakfast corners, and open-concept living-eating areas and similar tasks.

4. Consider a glass table if you have a dark home.

Something I hear regularly: “I want the space to feel light and airy.” It’s a mutual demand, but regrettably not every home has plenty of space or great natural light. The answer? A glass table. It will always open up and lighten any space. Yes, a glass table will need a bit more maintenance than a wood-topped dining table when it comes to blemishes, but a tiny swipe of glass cleaner will clean marks fast.

5. Don’t be scared of metallics.

Metal like Gold, silver, copper, iron — and all similar products are strong on their own and they pair well with nearly every color or pattern under the sun. You essentially never have to worry if your copper table legs will match the cool new wallpaper you buy since the answer will always be yes! Don’t be afraid to mix metals, either. The thought of two shiny shades being side by side can frighten some folks, but I actually advise customers it’s a good idea to avoid being redundant and too matchy in your design.
