How to Choose the Best Water Filter for Your New Home?

Written by Posted On Monday, 09 March 2020 15:12

Are you planning to buy the best water filter for your new home? Well, the choice may not be so easy given the many types and models available in the market today.

Here is a guide that can help you to choose the one that best fits your needs and home.

Make a list of your needs

As with everything, the first step is to identify what you want from a water filter. Do you know the water quality at your new home and the possible contaminants that may be present in it? If you do, then make a list of things that you need to eliminate from it. And if you don't know about the water quality, get this information first before you proceed with your choice.

A good alternative is to ask someone you know who lives in this area, preferably your new neighbors, to get an idea of what they use and the water quality and minerals in it. If none of this works, take a sample and send it to a lab for a detailed report.

Know the filter type

Once you know the water quality in your new home, the next step is to identify the right filter for it. This is fairly a simple job and any vendor can help you with this. In general, if you have heavy metals like copper, mercury or lead mixed with your water, it is best you choose activated carbon filters. On the other hand, if the water also contains chemicals, you can remove them using reverse osmosis filters and purifiers.

TDS levels

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is an important measure you should know, so you can buy a filter accordingly. These levels could vary from one area to another, depending on the source from which water is sent to your home. For example, if your TDS levels are between 0 to 200, it means your water is fairly clear, so a basic RO purifier should do. But if the TDS levels are more than 500, it means your water is hard, so you need a filter with advanced features that will soften the water and will make it more potable.

Location of your filter

Now that you know the type of filter that is ideal for your water quality, the next aspect you should consider is the location of the filter. If you plan to keep it in your kitchen, countertop filters are the best choice. On the other hand, if you want to keep it in your yard or garage, you can opt for big distillers.

Choose a reputed seller

Finally, buy water filters from a company that has the necessary permissions and certifications. This is one area that we tend to overlook, but not in this case because the filter should remove the contaminants from the water and the best possibility is to buy it from reputed companies.

Thus, these are some of the aspects to keep in mind before buying a water filter for your new home.
